DJ hardware
category: general [glöplog]
hey basslovers, i was looking for a not too pricey usb multi-channel sound card / DJ controller to give full power to traktor on a (crappy) lappy :D
what are your own hardware / opinions ?
i'm quite attracted by the BEHRINGER BCD2000 which is only 180 euros and looks far less toy than Hercules mass products...

DJ hardware should be a set of 2 turntables and a 2 channel mixer with crossfader along with some boxes of finest vinyl. Period :)
what d0DgE said.
...but you can get a final scratch too, and with traktor you can do a lot just with your 2-channel mixer, 2 decks and a notebook... its quite nice besides some limitations, but i have sold mine after some time because the real deal is always the best deal .
that was a good laugh.

B-CONTROL DEEJAY BCD2000
The ultimate DJ-Machine – Play, Mix, Perform and Scratch MP3-, OGG- and WAV-Files just like Vinyl-Records
that was a good laugh.
best dj tools: scissors, knives, glue, gasoline, etc. anything you can use to destroy the surface of the record, to make it sound better.
dunno, call me moron but for my ears the replay of a vinyl record
always sounds better, fuller with more ...ahm...deepness than
replayed from a digital background.
When the needle runs over the groove it causes static electricity
that further causes the typical humming of a turntable set.
Digital replaying IMHO is too clear, so the PA- guy really
must be a professional to set up a decent Low-Mid-High balance.

Never ever buy anything made by Behringer. Just get a pair of SL1200s.
Some people, who know what they're talking about, have said Rane's Serato Scratch would be much better than final scratch. Haven't tried myself.

Zest : I have the Hercules DJ Console and it is indeed a bit "toy-like" (quite flimsy assembly, nasty looking) but the soundcard is really quite decent and it does the job as a DJ controller (although I've only used it for probably about 10 hours since I bought it, about a year ago). And also, obviously while these things claim you can scratch your MP3s, that's a joke really and there's no chance you can get any accuracy with those tiny jog dials. They're fine for cueing in a tune, however.
As for vinyl sounding better than digital recordings - that's completely open to interpretation. Probably more important to DJs nowadays is the cost of music, and portability. Being that Zest wants to use a console with a laptop, he probably doesn't want to be lugging round massive turntables and a heavy box of records...

d0DgE has leading!
BEHRINGER quality is no longer what it used to be !
heh thanx for the advices.
i'm just an amateur wedding DJ and a die-hard fan of traktor since the first versions, so no real turntables for me :p
and uhm let's be not hypocritical, only pro DJs can afford to buy vinyles and all the DJ i've seen at french demoparties were using some PC, come on pouet people aren't we supposed to be digital freaks \o/
and i hate scratching :>
the Behringer quality (designed in Germany but made in China ;) seems to be disputed quite a lot but the fact is that the BSD2000 appears to be rare since its launch, many (web)shops are out of stock.

btw i still think a DJ/VJ compo would be cool at big demoparties :)
you do realise that anyone entering with a deck of 12's win, nomatter how poor the mix is.
What the heck, I can just as well post it here too:

i love my behringer.
after a whole afternoon tuning session i can say that i'm pretty impressed by the Behringer BCD2000, it's damn great as a slim mobile almost pro DJ system for only 180 euros :)
the usb audio interface sounds great as far as i can hear and the console knobs are quality (dunno their longevity in the long run though...).
now to make it work smoothly with Traktor i had to disable the wifi network on my crappy lappy and install an open-source MIDI translator specially made to combine the BCD2000 with Traktor.
even the VJ around could be interested by it according to this review.
teh 'beast' :

i must add that the best feature with such a traktor/bcd2k system is the easy prelisten ability which is essential when you browse through your giant music collection to build the playlist according to the mood of the audience :)
some people actually manage to scratch their mp3 pretty well :D
