Reevaluations

category: general [glöplog]

in the abscence of redeeming artistical qualities, or due to the
immaturity of the overall environment the critical judgement falls
back on the examination of objective qualities.

in the module days: the quality of the samples,
the virtuosity of the tracking, "impressive" gimmicks
like the file size, or being able to play backwards.

For demos, the number of objects displayed, their size..

...

A peculiar process is happening: once the objective qualities of the
work are tuned to the expectations of the environment, starts the
cultural or aesthetical judgement to take power.

Also at the same time as the expectation grows, and especially when
the amount of productions is starting to get reasonably high,
intolerance of "the average" grows.

...

two mechanisms: either go back to the first state, by investing in
originality, which is a subjective but quantifiable quality; or
try to reach "universality":
- meet the standard man's aesthetical standards
- appeal to cultural gimmicks (all your base, "oldschool")
- perfect all the aspects of a certain form
...

as "local" qualities such as the qualities of one shading routine, or
the quality of one sole effect, critical judgement passes from a micro
to a macroscopic evaluation.. and in this switch lays surely quite a
few of the disharmony we see.

...

an interesting phenomenon is that when a n artist goes "pro", it's
output seem less impressive.. as it is compared to a wider set of
artists :: it crossed the point of no return when it is not understood
as being part of a clique, to enter the social collective.

knos, this is exactly what the scene needs - reflection over its state and phenomena. i'd really like to read a worked-out essay based on these thoughts.

Thanks for advertising for us!

Of course we'd be interested in publishing more philosophical articles about the demo scene and demo making as well.

Yeah, we have found the real essence of the scene in this post; meditation.
I remember those words in a complex's demo;
I know what I know and what I know is that we are not of the same kind, because if you know what I know, you...

Mainly the coder was meaning that his oldskool hi optimizing experience which is mainly about arithmetic, lead him to deep understanding of life. In short he discovered that human beeing is a machine, everything is mechanical, mathematic and he understood that he has discovered the truth; the scientific truth. Life is mathematic, physic, science and everything is revolving around numbers and their different faces.

We need articles about such high phylosophical content, that's the other fruit which come with hi coding experience; you're brain coders, continue to analyse the reality when you're away of the screen and the compiler. That's why the scene have a meaning, and this meaning is the quest for truth.
