Damn DSL!!!
category: general [glöplog]
I am with ye olde modem now. And I can do teh work. It's ridiculous!!!
We got the DSL 384kb, Forthnet (greek people tell me there are problems with this provider, but so fuckin big?). Ok, my 2 brothers are great leechers, but even when they don't download stuff, or block their download stuff, or have a netlimiter, simple web browsing is worse than a modem. I don't mean it's 2kbs, at it's good times it's 10kbs or more, but it's10kbs for few seconds and then 0kbs for a minute. It freezes, everything freezes, nothing passes, while it's free for downloading and stuff! My brothers have experienced this ugly thing in browsing too..
There was something worse that happened today, both in my PC and my brother's PC. Yahoo, pouet, blogspot and others, I couldn't login. Yahoo told me I must have disabled the cookies. But I have not and I have closed antispyware firewalls and others to check. If it happens the same day in my brothers computer, then it's now just my own settings. And now, with modem, I can normally login in all of these! How can DSL affect such stuff and block everything???
If the few greek guys who read this, know anything about Forthnet problems tell me. Else, I will try to find also some other greek forums about cpumters and ask..
It's amazing. I try to make evolution in my internet and you just can't browsw with that! Switching back to modem till I find the problem..

Greece, still providing internet from 1998!
Torrents, bringing ya back to the old modem feeling by sucking your bandwidth to the bone.

we have bandwitdh which can beat your bandwitdh.
hey optimus, stop whining and come in France. You will have strong DSL with low rate but you will have to bear us.
C'mon, that's a good deal for great DSL.

Yes yes we know, Scandinavian internet > other internet.
Optimus, did you try upgrading the firmware of your router? Or more important, did you try configuring your router?
Because my problems were solved (well, partially... but that's another story) after a firmware update. (Tho, I had to wait for a proper release for ~4 months)

Optimus:
I use the same provider and have the same line (384kbps). Forthnet is perhaps the best DSL provider in Greece. I use a DSL modem _not_ a DSL router, because cheap DSL routers cannot handle many concurrent connections and usually hang. This usually happens when you do alot of P2P (kazaa and friends).
We limit our P2P clients transfer rates, and we also limit the traffic on the linux-based router. The problem is of course the uplink speed, which is ridiculously low (128kbps). If you clog it, your link is as good as dead.
The low uplink speed, the misconfiguration and downright sabotage of the connecting terminals are all the fault of a single unit: the Greek Telecommunication Organisation (OTE). Forthnet is doing the best it can under the circumstances. You should do the same. And also hope that some company will finally break the telecommunication monopoly in Greece and bring it on par with the rest of Europe.
Hope that helps.

and I though we were retarded here with only 16Mbit ADSL connection for 34,90euro/month... lol
Just to get on your nerves ::
Downlink : 24Mbits/s
Uplink : 8Mbits/s
Optimus : Try to change your DNS server configuration, or try to change your router configuration, open the port 113 (ident port) which is sometimes the port to have open for login identifications shits. That's just my two cents.
Just so you know.

Where are you located all there?
This is to know DSL quality over europa at a glimpse.
In France, we have 24 Mb/s DSL downstream bitrate in "unlinked" zones (zones where the ISP plug your phone line directly to his network, you don't pay phone abo anymore and you don't have old phone service anymore, everything is VOIP then), 8 to 10 Mb/s in "linked" zones. Moreover we get everywhere VOIP telephony meaning we don't pay for national landline phone call anymore (with some exceptions for special numbers), and international / mobile phone calls are at a reduced price. "Unkinked" get free IP TV channels added and can get more channels if they pay more. All DSL access come with uncapped download / upload. Standard old modem service is dying quickly (far far too slow for nowadays internet pages). We pay 15€ for 2 months phone abo. There is around 10 ISP in France.
In UK this was a mess: 107 ISP for London!!! It was poor and expensive: 512 Kb/s download & 128 Kb/s upload for 20£ + 10£ of phone abo per month for Pipex / UK Online. Quality was not great at all. But things change and if you're in a "unlinked" zone you get 8 Mb/s (6Mb/s in reality). However, Navis is right: if you don't download like a madman, bitrate doesn't matter so much as text page like pouet and such don't requires high speed connections.
Optimus: read the manual and get into the router configuration, there is plenty of things to configure there to get fast access and bitrate. Follow my tips in the mail, you'll get a boost guaranteed.
And all others, try to use TCP / IP Optimizer free for download, this really speed up access. Try also to patch Win XP SP2 so you can get more than the 10 connexions at once. Find a patch for this. P2P becames faster with this patch applied.

It's my two brothers who download stuff. I can't stop that!
Anyways, I had a Netlimiter programm and what I didn't thought to do was to limit upload for the p2p programms my brother was running. I was only limiting download because I thought these programms need only that. Now it works quite better but there is still much to do..
Thanks for the other comments. I will do the rest (firmware, router configurations, etc.) when my brother arrives at home and I inform him we can do all these stuff to optimize connection. Thanks for the email ep, it was very nice, I'll reply to you soon. I am still preety busy with studying and shit right now..
I got into the ADSL.gr website and I've seen a big forum with several complains (150 forum pages, didn't read more than 2% of them ;P). Some people talk about DSLAM that is busy depending on your areas (what is that?), most people agree it's because of OTE. I can agree with Okkie now :)

I suggest you to report your brothers to local anti-piracy agents.
Nothing beats an original and also you'll have your problems solved for a while :)

We have computers which can beat your computers...
My DSL provider is Czech telecom, I can't complain, Everything works as expected, if something is blocked, it's because of my soft firewall, not Telecom.
3072/256kbits (cca 2500 in reality)
downloads are 320-330 KB/sec, I don't care about upload so much, but it's about 220kbit.
And,yeah, torrents are killing everyone's bandwith :-(
I downloaded enya's albums yesterday (920MB) and i took me 8 hours, guess what, my uploads were BIGGER than the download itself, horrible.

Optimus: when your internet access will be optimised you can expect huge (in my case I've doubled my bitrate) improvements: routers and stuff like that came with the lamest settings possible.
Hint: they do this so you call the hotline which in most case is not free!!! I suggest you to disable (uninstall) all protocols and stuff not really needed in network settings like microsoft client, file and printer sharing, windows firewall, netbios, just let tcp-ip protocol and if you can disable dhcp do it (configure your ip in hrd like 192.168.0.2, set your dns in hard).
Feel free to contact me, I'll send you some screenshots about a good configuration.
I suggest you to install M$ antispyware, javacool antispyware and spyguard + avg and adaware + a good firewall like outpost. This will prevent all kind of assault provided you close all your router port in input using the inside setup of your router (type 192.168.0.1 inside a browser to get into it, or try another private IP, you can get the right one doing a tracert www.google.com in a dosbox: the second ip displayed is the one of your router).
The firewall will ring you everytime something strange happen like a program wanting to go to the internet without your consent (like trojans do).
I suggest you to scan your computer asap against all kind of trojans and spyware because you may be victim of that kind of pest yet.
oxbow: are you related to oxbab?

Few people have it, many people want to have it. Do the math!
yes madenmann, I fully understand that, and that almost everyone knows that too, I was just pointing to the bandwith usage, other tan that, ur absolutely right :-)
in italy we have a 4mbit downstream + 256kbit downstream dsl line for 39euros from telecom, but there are some new providers that can do a 4 mbit dsl + voip at the same price
