Is that scene spirit? Take free scene productions and sell them printed?

In my opinion, as long as everything is done with permission from the authors this (just like (the excellent) The Masters of Pixel Art-books), this is fine.

I guess noone told the Mindcandy guys that they weren't scene spirit.

Quite a few people actually told them that back in the days

given the silly franglism in the title (ffs) my hopes for this book are not very high

I assume they're getting permission? Also, after printing and shipping, I bet that there's not going to be much more than 1 month salary left of that $14k goal. I never made a book so I might be off here, but I bet the effort involved in getting permission, interviews, structuring and layouting is much more than that.

This is not comparable to running a demo through kkapture and putting it on Youtube with ads on.

0 info about the author, 0 info about the actual content (apart from random demo screenshots we all know). Looks like it's made by some random opportunist who will bring nothing new to the table, besides making a few bucks on the demoscene's back.

Until the author proves he can bring interesting content, it looks more like money wasted than anything else...

Why? Usually scene book authors don't ask permission...

That was the first I saw when looking at the site. Told me a lot about the quality to expect. :D

Maybe it would help if some of the people listed under "Contributors" who are also active members of this forum could speak out what they are actually contributing... ;)
Hey, if the book consists of nothing but screenshots, at least it'll contain approx. 5000 fewer factual errors than Freax vol.1! :P

We asked every featured group for permission and gave them all free copies. If these guys did the same, I'd consider that the same level of "scene spirit".

The guy behind that book is a demoscene enthusiast.
He´s doing it with best intentions. Not to earn $$$.
As far as i know he contacted many old sceners to get a little bit of information about their demos and did some interviews.
He also asked me for permission. Hope he asked the others aswell.
So from my side its ok.

Signing off,
Virgull. oops.

"Demos and the demomaker scene started with the advent of the Apple computer at the end of the 70's" - what is a "demomaker scene"? :P

I think that it's a great idea. Would love the same from the early PC days.
