The LayerOne Demoparty

When: May 23rd 2015 9:00PM
Where: LayerOne 2015 Conference - DoubleTree Hotel, Monrovia, CA

found on hackaday

is this too good to be true? "adult beverages" and the party is outside?
Odd, only WebGL/JS, no binary?

Seems odd they wouldn't announce it in other places, such as here, too. Or even on demoparty.net. The US scene might not be big, but they don't think we sit alone by ourselves, do they? :P

Seems a rather interesting rule, considering there's a chunk of people who might have submitted otherwise. They're trying to avoid people using executable packing tools ... ?
iiiinteresting. They appear focused on "unusual hardware", this may have something to do with the security focus of the overall conference. I do think they mean premier not premiere though. (:

dropped them a mail. Curious to see if I already know them.
Hi folks!

I'm the organizer of this Demoparty. I've very new to all of this if you can't tell :P

I was inspired by the many demo's I saw here on Pouet. When I found out that almost all of the big ones occur in Europe I figured I should try to start something here (I don't make it over seas very often, maybe once a year).

Since I'm new to all this, any feedback is appreciated (trolling, yelling, questioning, booze, ice cream, more trolling).

So I'll tackle a few of the questions asked so far.

Binaries are accepted. I'll change this in the rules shortly!

Removing the line "Must use Python". packed executable will be accepted. I'll make this change soon.

Please feel free to email me with questions! (email available on the party page)

Hello Arko! Welcome to the scene.

Pleased to see another North American organizer!

I cannot attend your party this time, but am pleased you are running it.

Hope to meet you someday, and you should also meet:
- the Carnegie Mellon Computer Club guys who run Demosplash, held every October in Pittsburgh
- and Gloom and Gargaj, sceners from Norway and Hungary who run NVScene, a demoparty that is part of NVidia's Graphics Technology Conference in March, about five hours from you by car in San Jose

Dropped you an email as well. I'm just making graphics and Windows demos so far, so I can't send you a prod, but happy you're starting another party!
Okay now the website says "JavaScript (WebGL/Binary)" - I think we have an odd misunderstanding here.

I derp'ed. Sorry, could you elaborate?

My comment was aimed that at that state of the compo rules, you were not able to enter a demo / 64k / 4k / etc that runs outside a browser. Now it's changed to "Javascript (WebGL/Binary)" which instead just makes no sense (what's "Javascript Binary"?) :)

Yeah, I just realized that I shouldn't make rule changes running on 3 hours of sleep and no coffee. You're right, that doesn't make sense.. like.. at all.

To actually answer your question, at the moment there isn't really a category that includes running binaries on the compo computer other than the Wild category where anything goes. I know usually, for example, there's a windows category with 64k/4k/etc, but I wasn't sure anyone from around here writes demos for those platforms.

It's been difficult gauging the audience/attendees. Since this is the first year, I'm gonna stick with the categories, and if there are enough entries for say windows or c64 in the wild category, I will actually add them as official categories next year.

I've love to see more c64, amiga, etc entries!

Gargaj, well you could use node-webkit with your code package appended to the end of the main executable like they indicate ... ;) but that means a 55 MB hit up front, putting you outside the size limits of the compo, even if the environment is decent.

There's also packing your demo in to a PNG to save space with a loader, that's binaryish? :)
If I for some reason send a remote entry for oscilloscope with a courier . . . do you think you could get your hands on a oscilloscope?
it's not unheard of for small parties to just run a combined democompo and bundle everything in it, anything goes as long as it's running realtime, just announce the platform (and size) on the big screen.

but on the other hand specifying concrete categories makes people focus. so doing a separation for size limited and non size limited stuff would also work: "combined demo" and "combined intro" (that accepts typical formats of 64k, 32k, 4k, 1k).

in european demoparties the wild category is usually for animation/video stuff (non realtime), there is also the "real wild" which stands for any platform not listed on the other compos as long as it runs realtime.

i would probably go for a single category only if i was you, being first party and not having fixed partygoers yet, would give them more freedom to deliver whatever they are working on. and then based on the turn out and talks with the folks who showed up you can decide what categories they would rather have for the next edition.

just 2 cents. best of luck for your event!

Sure! No problem. Please mention this in your remote entry email.

Any idea how much the L1 board might end up costing?
added on the 2014-10-11 11:41:02 by Gargaj Gargaj
We are beginning production this week and planning to sell at $30 each. It will be available on the Hackaday Store and L1demo.org

so, did anyone buy the board? hope prep is going well
Regarding competition rules:
DemoJS 2014 (also known as FuckJS) did basically the opposite of what you do, they allowed "real" binaries in their compos (which were javascript only the years before).

Revision 2014 merged "real" binary & webbrowser compos.

That's most probably not going to happen, at least not with high quality stuff. :)

What is "Secret Board", is it cut-down version of L1 board?
Looks limited enough to be interesting =)

I bet three spinning cubes that the Secret Board will be the parent conference badge with this CPU.
what emulators do you want to use for ZX Spectrum?
