Space: 1999 - The Trailer by Defence Force [web]
======================================== Space: 1999 'Out of Memory' Trailer Intro ======================================== An Oric game demo preview ======================================== Release date: July 2010 ======================================== _______ _| | | _ _| | '-' | |___e_f_e_n_c_e |_________| | | | _______| | ___/______o_r_c_e |__| ======================================== About this demo: ======================================== Well, first this is not really a demo. It's probably not even an intro. What this is, is a 32kb rewrite of the Space: 1999 TV show intro, running on an Oric computer. Of course doing so just for the sake of doing it would be kind of pointless, so the important thing is that it is just a teaser for the actual Space 1999: Oric game. As far as we know, 'Out of memory' (that's the title of the game), is the only attempt at doing Isometric 3D on this machine. If you never heard of the TV show, well I guess you can take a look on Wikipedia, but basically it was an UK/US coproduction running from 1975 to 1977 with some of the cast who played in Mission: Impossible. Some people hate that serie, I loved it! ======================================== How can I watch this?: ======================================== That's easy. You either have a real Oric with a disk unit, in which case all you have to do is to dump the .DSK file to a real 3" or 3.5" floppy (use WriteDsk for that, you can ask on our forums if you don't know) Or you don't have an Oric, in which case you can use one of the many Oric emulator now available. The emulator of choice these days is Oricutron, developped by Xeron, which has the benefit of running on a multitude of different operating system, of being open source, and still developped: - http://code.google.com/p/oriculator/ If you like this trailer, then you should definitely try the game! As usual the source code will be available on the subversion repository (after the party) - http://miniserve.defence-force.org/svn and the video will be uploaded on you tube ======================================== The gory details: ======================================== Not much of goryness I fear, mostly the work was to get all the graphics and text fit in memory, and try to depack that fast enough to follow the original rythm of the TV show intro. The reason why the floppy disk is required is to be able to use the 16k of additional memory. Nothing is loaded after the main loading, just this memory used to unpack data. The rotating planet is not an animation, it's really a really draw disc object with a pseudo dithering mapping. The explosion is of course a good old table driven rendering, but it's actually testing per "pixel" if there's graphics to avoid detroying the surface of moon base alpha. It's already enough messed up, isn't it? I wanted to do more, but unfortunately I caught a bad virus, so instead of spending some days coding like a monkey I spend my time in the bed sweating like a pig. Definitely not as efficient... ======================================== What's next?: ======================================== Don't miss the next big Oric productions - 1337 (Elite for the Oric, but better) - Stormlord ======================================== To contact us: ======================================== Website: - http://space1999.defence-force.org Official game Forum: - http://forum.defence-force.org/viewtopic.php?t=401 irc: - #oric on IRCnet Other Defence Force Oric productions: ------------------------------------- Buggy Boy - Made for LCP Party 2004 (Sweden) - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=13000 Barbitoric - Made for Alternative Party 2003 (Finland): - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=8558 Assembly 2002 invtro - Made for Assembly 2002 (Finland): - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=6977 Quintessential - Released at the VIP4 (FRANCE) demo party in 2003: - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=6864 Oric Giga Demo - Released at the VIP3 (FRANCE) demo party in 2002: - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=3102 STNICCC C64 Revisited - Released at the STNICCC 2000 (HOLLAND) demo party in 2000: - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=3105 Just Oric - Released at the Volcanic 4 (FRANCE) in 1997 - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=3131
