| About
|
| This demo shows the trip of the Pioneer 10, a probe sent in 1972 by the
| NASA, which carried a message from mankind to the universe sculpt in a
| plaque. The plaque was designed by Dr. Carl Sagan and Dr. Frank Drake,
| and the artwork was made by Carl's wife, Linda Sagan.
|
| Dr. Sagan was one of the most famous astronomers in the world, and well
| known as a promoter of the "Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence"
| (a.k.a. SETI). Dr. Frank Drake, also professor of Cornell Uni., is the
| inventor of the Drake equation, an attempt to estimate the number of
| extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy with which we might come in
| contact.
|
| Our demo describes the places the spaceship will visit, and a history
| about its landing on an outer planet of the galaxy in a far future. The
| planet is R'Idaia, in the system of Sector Omega, with Aldebaran as main
| star (current Tauri constellation).
|
| The message is then read there by R'Idaians, and Sagan's dream is then
| made truth :)

| To the astronomy freakies: I know the Pioneer will reach Aldebaran in 2
| million years, not ~17000 years; and the stars and the small brown dwarf
| orbiting Aldebaran may not have the correct size/colors, but.. design is
| design, and a plot is a plot :)

| The demo is a tribute to Dr Sagan, who passed away the 20th of December,
| 1996, after popularizing science in order to make people take interest
| and understand the cosmos, and also being a pioneer in his research work
| in fields like exobiology and extraterrestrial intelligence.
