great music. nice routines. but no design.
anyway, nice, but boring a bit.

boring ? don't think so !
you can't be bored with this awesome jugi's soudtrack =)

the 1995 smash hit that introduced effect boxes into the pc scene :)
looking back now, it can be a bit hard to understand why this demo felt so revolutionary back then - after all it's basically a terribly slow-paced object show with some rather bad graphics and a pompous and repetitive tune. but if you compare dope to some of the popular object show demos of the time (like, say, holistic by cascada vr section - a demo that nobody remembers anymore) it's evident that dope has a completely different coherence to it.
it's a question of attitude: dope takes itself very seriously, and everything in it is planned to support that. it doesn't matter that the effects aren't that amazing on their own, when they're presented in such a convincing way.
that's why i think dope is actually a superbly designed demo, contrary to what many people say. there's simply no other explanation for its impact on the pc scene.

Imagine you're a North American, at your first major demoparty in 1995. You've probably seen no more than 20 demos, and your favorite is probably Second Reality. Then, all of a sudden, this DOPE demo shows up on the big screen after it's downloaded fresh from The Gathering across the ocean. As Snowman/Hornet said in the party farewell speech, you've might've been impressed by it if you watched it at home, but to have seen such a demo at your first party ever with sceners you're meeting for the first time, was an unmatchable emotional experience. And that experience is what makes Dope a classic.
But even back in Europe, the demo was popular enough to inspire several parodies, including Rope and Nope. Most people looking back at it now will pass it off as an object show, but I'll never forget the first time I saw it.
p.s. saffron, you hit it dead on the nail too. :)

I was impressed at my 486. One of the fastest and most impressive object shows I had ever seen!
Unfortunatelly I had never a GUS. I heard the Mod from Winamp and I liked it very much,. it's superb! (Well,.. a little repeatitive but still superb! :)
I wish I will see that with sound for the first time in my life, when the GUS32 emulator for DOS is out!

This was perhaps THE demo of the Year 1995. I remember seeing it at X'95 in Holland, where it ran over and over and over on everyone's PC with crowds of fascinated (or maybe just stoned :) sceners around them, the music turned to full volume, and all those discussions like "how did they do that", "are thse really 7800 polygons?", "world domination? those arrogant bastards", "nah, those shadows are only clever environment mapping, I did that five years before", "28 CHANNELS? HOW THE FUCK CAN YOU WASTE 28 CHANNELS?" etc. It simply HAD a great impact on the whole scene. Just like Cyboman II did.
And for me, it was the reason (together with "tears in her eyes" by The REW/Nostalgia which i listened to at the same party) to buy a GUS and later a PC around it :), so well, it has a particular value for me :)

the demo of the year 95?! damn, compare this to stars^nooon... the only thingie dope left in my mind was the fakepolycounting and the bad design.
but eh, music rocked :)
but eh, music rocked :)
it's a old-filosophy demo i think, with rather older concept (to let you shock with the possibilities of pc and to let you only watch it stunned). but it has marvellous music and is very sympatic. you should object theres nothing much to show now but we don't have the 1995 year now...
What can I say... I like dope! :)
I remember tg95, it was in my home town of Stavanger. Rumor had it that there was some drunk Finns at the place (jugi) and that they had a production with them that was totally unlike everything ever seen. Well ..
One of the best demos ever with the best soundtrack _ever_!
even though it's a slideshow of effects, dope is a great demo, which made a great impact on the scene when it was released (read above). juig's music is absolutely marvellous. world domination? be my guest! :)
My vote here... and a correction: The tune i mentioned above is of course calles "Fear in her eyes", sorry :)
I knew the song before seeing the demo : this jugi's tune was the first XM i loaded in FT2 :) By the way, the demo is exceptionnal for 1995.
actually, i think it's a mod. still world domination though...
a very good demo when it was released. though, i don't think it was the best in '95.
the music is very good.
the music is very good.
The 'das product' of '95? Very controversial! :-)
It was new, it was impressive, it was good. And most people still remember this demo very well. Definately a classic!

Just to vote.
what I want to say is that when I ran the demo - it was in 1995 i was really amazed, and as i think, it's far better by design compared to theroduct.
And I love how it stylishly exists ;) stopping the music in the middle.
As for music, it's definetly the best (after Second Reality, even now in 2001). I even remastered this song into mp3. (anyone who wants the remaster please mail hmd@mail.ru - if you know where i can find a free host where mp3s are allowed - i'll upload it there)

Impressive...
Not very designish, but still, if you consider the date...

Vote the music!
i never liked the design, but the code.. wheee. it was such a shameless brute-force code showoff, it just had to impress and definitively motivate a young scener back then. thumbs up for making me want to get 8000 polys in sw :)
Dope is one of *the* classic demos that we'll never forget. The soundtrack still kicks. Luckily I'm not only still able to watch it but I was also at TG'95 and could see it on the big screen :)
classic. the effects get abit boring after a couple times but the music will always stay in our hearts.
The music featured in this demo is the music every coder wants to have in his alarmclockradiosnoozersystemdevice.
another note, you may say this demo is incoherent, but that is in a coherent way. And that my friend concludes todays lecture on aestetics.
a true classic!
Very nice, loved that 7800 poly-thing. Too bad that I never got to see it with music (damn GUS only!). Nowadays I probably can't watch it at all since I doubt it would run under WinXP...
i liked it back then, and the music rocks
gee, this demo sucks!
This demo blew me away when I first saw it...
It introduced a new level of technical excellence...
Bumpmapping, shadows, material morph, great specular lighting, and ultra-high poly count ofcourse.
One of the great 486 demos.

Probably one of the reasons I got a GUS too :-)
...and still have it!

One of the few demos I could show to my non-scene-friends back in those days.
*Aahhh...nostalgia about the days when being a computer affectionate meant being a social outcast* :)

The music, awww, the music!
absolute classic. i remember seeing it at tg95 for the first time and the feeling you got from it was absolutely astonishing. great effectshow and *GREAT* music. onward.xm is in my xmplay-playlist forever, massive kudos to jugi for this great great great track. the only negative thing about this demo is the inspiration to two years of "copy-demos". :)
yesssss!
Get your GUS and fire it up! Jugi's "Onward" track still gives me the chills, and the demo is definitely amazing.
Forget all the critics about counting vertices and polys, this is the bomb, and it will rule forever!
Forget all the critics about counting vertices and polys, this is the bomb, and it will rule forever!
some of the coolest music ever.. Shame that theres no way to see this again without getting another pc. And those gus-cards are probably hard to come by
yeah, the music does rule. though, i've heard it too many times from uncle-x's mobile.
this is exactly what a demo should be. "design" demos like moralhardcandy and shit _suck_.
I beg to differ.
not only do you IMO compare two products being of altogether different styles and from different eras, but you're generalizing with certain absoluteness too while saying that everything in one genre is "shit" and "sucks". but that of course is but _your_ opinion...
designwise this is nice, but the music just
doesn't contain the elements needed to make me consider it as 'superb' or 'awesome'. I think it's merely ok.
due to my personal taste of music I'd much rather hear MD's tracks blazon forth from peoples mobiles...

people who want to say what all demos (or any other form of art, since demos _are_ a form of art) should look like are nazis and should die a horrible death.
sure, dope is fucking good but not all demos should be like it.
and if all demos were like dope, who would want to see more than one demo ever?

\o/ DOPE \o/
dope!
At the end of 94 it was still the time of the amiga scene absolutely setting the trends on how demos should look like. This was why second reality in parts somehow looks like the creators tried to imitate amiga hardware effects (f.e. imitating "glenz vectors").
Early 95 "dope" for me was the first (well known) demo that really concentrated on what PC's were better at than amigas: 3D, 3D and 3D and orchestral sound tracks with more than 4 sound channels.
Very shocking for many especially in the so much more elite amiga scene with many desperate tries to imitate it in the following years.
To make it short: a milestone.

What, no comment from me yet? This is a great demo with a kickass soundtrack, I never got tired it even when I listened to Nectarine every day and they play it very often.
It's funny to read the commentaries on DemoDVD about this demo and the overall hype of the metal plates, describing the effects and the crazy fakes. And I finally found out from the DVD, the possible truth about who mr.Larusso is. The math professor of one of the coders!!! :)
great soundtrack, great demo
Haven't commented this one?
a real classic... i remember sitting breathless watching the effects telling how? who? darn! and the likes... and watching it again, and again, and there was nope, rope... and this again :)

I never voted for this ?!
One of the best demos _ever_
And about the soundtrack, I couldn't get rid of that melody during weeks :)
And about the soundtrack, I couldn't get rid of that melody during weeks :)
THE music for god's sake
it's the fucking best soundtrack ever
a really catchy and unforgettable soundtrack. it has already been remixed on the zx, and i'm on my way to do it on the c64. =p
I've seen the demo separately from the music by using a Windows ME bootdisk, and it was a very slow (silent) demo, with a couple of effects that TBL did two years later in 64kb, (so it was probably extremely good for the time) but I also have the music... whoa! The music alone is worth several thumbs.
A demo i've always been showing on my msdos computers.
gods.
Ruled ! :)
Ruled ! :)
Uh, my vote is missing here...
So:
- major lack of coherency;
- "fake it big time" galore;
- no sych at all;
- fabolous music.
One of the best demos ever, independently on the many minuses. Only JMagic makes it possible (or Jugi, perhaps) :)

many thumbs up for the music.
I deeply fell in madness to be unable to listen to it with my amiga and I resurrected the day I got my PC and my gravis ultrasound!

The production lacks any real intensity but I love the sound track.
the soundtrack is cool
Ohhh,. a new coup de cour. Rulexyz!!!
THE soundtrack
respect!!!
Quite why anyone would enjoy a long slow object show with a load of fake effects, i've no idea. But i still like it.
Quote:
a coup de coeur is a french expression a bit hard to explain in english, at least for me ^^;
in the pouët.net case, just think of it like a kickass but not well known prod.
Dope doesn't quite fit the description as it is in fact a very wellknown production, but still kickass so it get's the thumb.
This demo was truely amazing - I liked the darkness in it, but still some of the effects go on for too long, and the music is a bit too repetitive.
But still I find it definitely a classic - I really liked those damn little boxes, which definitely kept staying in the scene for a long time. Another thing which was great, was that Jmagic at that time was so productive, and still managed to keep the quality so high!

It's so beautiful... *sniff*
mmm m m m mm mm mmmm m m m
eheh i saw yesterday this one when browsing my old demos.. coup de coeur is great choice for this one.. and for you too..
Damn, I really love this demo. It has one of the best demotracks ever, and features pretty cool effects (although some are shown slightly too long). Still, this has got to be one of the best the scene has to offer.
hei can anyone get me that .midi version of the ring tone?
dixan maybe?
i know i know, i should just do it myself, but im lazy :P
dixan maybe?

Yes, this is a good demo.
1st pc demo I've seen
:D
nice
i also want the .mid!!!! btw, how do u get .mids as ringtones of demos? did anyone do that already? wouldn't that be a nice thing to do? yes? yes? ok.
okay for the soundtrack. im not so much
fan of the rest of stuff...
fan of the rest of stuff...
It was just amazing when released.
the song was a 29-track MTM Multitracker-module as far as I remember, so no ringtone because it was no midi-file. I thought it was quite awesome that my Gus was able to mix this thing in realtime with 0% processor usage! Loved that soundtrack!
it was a modified .mod-file, and no; of course you cannot make a midi-file out of it. well - you *can*, but then you would have to exchange all the lovely samples with horrible gm-sounds, and that *will* suck ass. :)
rulez! the music kicks ass
haven't thumbed yet.
ah yes. good old one
slow as heckness, didn't watch whole thing
vote
Even if the whole demo was crappy, I would give it a thumb up just because the music. I love the music! :-) :-) (and the demo too!). Don't forget to download the tune in demodulate site!!
Horray for old computers with DOS and GUS,
horray for Mindcandy-DVD and
horray for .wav-compatible cell phones.
And yes, the demo rocked.

Eh, I probably forgot to vote. ;-)
For [b]Jugi[b]'s soundtrack, wich I listened all over again during months at that time!
one thing never told is the crappy sound quality of the music... it's messy. Sound quality with FT2+16bit sound and 28 channels (!!) was not an option in 1995. It was necessary after so many years of 8bit-4channel-crappy interpolation-nodynamic amiga sound domination !
The soundtrack is still a favourite in my queue =)
Found it on a PCFormat CD (issue 57) and I didnt get it at all. Blew me away
works on dosbox
Best *.mod file ever. Probably. And the demo is neat too. :)
yeah this is dope..
nice trax and some fx.
good demo.
good demo.
It seemed a bit jerky when watched with dosbox. Luckily, it was more enjoyable when viewed from Mindcandy DVD. If you haven't seen this one by now: watch it! You're missing a big part of scene history :)
can someone delete that idiotic spam?
oh yeah. saw it at the gathering 95, ruled bigtime!
lamers
:O
Love the soundtrack
amusing abuse of envmaps with great music
Bring it back to the "Coup de Coeur" :)
Yummy, i remember this from long time ago - still a warm place in my heart...
I never really understood peoples admiration for this one. Maybe it's a bit harsh of me to give it a thumbs down, but it really does'nt do it for me. It never really evolves imho. Maybe you have to had seen it when it came out in order to appreciate it, since people apparently believed in polycounts/redering techniques etc :-)
Excellent
The music. musicmusicmusicmusic. The demo itself is a bit boring and features fake effects with mindless boasting, but the soundtrack is the best one in any demo ever.
Excellent of course
All the fake fx and lying about stats and hyping things up makes my american sensibilites proud. Still, a nice looking demo (although the spiral fire thingy goes on way too long) and has really nice music and at least to the uninitiated, seems way the fuck more impressive than it's already impressive nature. The commentary on the mindcandy dvd about this is great too. Worth a look!
Top music!
Music.
=)
I was there...at that TG. Lamers.
this demo really ROX!
awsome music! great visuals!
Very good presentation and fantastic sound! But everybody knows that already...
Haha, I love the attitude of this one.
7800 thumbs up.
1995 world domination.
GREAT soundtrack
A very good demo!
gosh! i don't vote for this one ??? shame on me :)
music.
I love it...
shame on me too :-)
:)
the only prod which certainly CAN claim "World Domination" (for it's time)
The soundtrack is the best Demo soundtrack of all times and that materialmorphing cat is awesome. Why isn't the demo twice as long?
The sound's really fine and the demo flows quite softly with effects that still look relatively nice. I like the fire that basically connects three different scenes and eliminates the typical separation feel of different effects in a classic style demo. Dope also seems quite coherent in style somehow. Everyone should see this, it's alone a sufficient reason to own a GUS along with a few other demos. OTOH, it's on Mindcandy too... But then, seeing the original is better than seeing a lossily packed video of it.
Awsome demo with perfect music!
here's my thumb!
Dope is the first PC demo i reallly enjoyed and consider as good/better than amiga ones.
if JMagic ears me -----> DO A WIN32 PORT !! (even if it turn good on Dosbox )
if JMagic ears me -----> DO A WIN32 PORT !! (even if it turn good on Dosbox )
This is a piece of pure coding mindbending, designing maniac art! The music is one of the greatest tune EVER! It doesnt get any better than this! No, it doesnt....
Dear god i didn't thumb this yet?!?!
awright
massive
Rules forever
Perfect One :)
quite nice for a pc demo of 1995.
one of the best scores in demo ever. IMO
Was surprised why the music is so overrated (also for 1995). But a nice demo for 1995 on PC.
.. and yes, it is one of the best demo musics ever!
Somebody should remix it with better samples.. (sounds a bit 'thin' nowadays)
Somebody should remix it with better samples.. (sounds a bit 'thin' nowadays)
@Stelth: is also in the demo zip file :) Also sounded a bit thin in 1995 from my point of view.
The mod is addictive. I've just seen the visuals for the first time, I feel that's enough. But again, the mod is addictive.
yay for complex! \o/

greate tune
Jugis' best!
I think some of the scenes are a little bit too long and it seems to me more or less like a “what can I fake with faked environment maps” object show tutorial. On the other hand there is this great sound track and the nice optics making it all together to a great demo – at least 1995. Thumb up!
Great stuff for its time.
No comment yet.. hmph.. Music alone deserves thumbs way up
a classic
obvious thumb
One of my favorites for sure.
Object rotator with awesome music. Thumb up for great tune.

one of the real classics. the track is the best ever imo.
mandatory thumb.
btw, it's big fun to watch dope on a 386sx. There are about 10^5 different timing bugs, so you can never predict what will happen next; it's almost a different demo each time :)

Technically really good for 1995, but it always bored the hell out of me. Don't like the soundtrack too much either.
alpha centauri: then there is something seriously wrong with you.
tastes differ, gloom.
I understand this was brethtaking in 1995 when I should have seen it. Today it's only boring for me :(
Epic <3
(what saffron and phoenix said)
watching this at naid 1995 with a few hundred other demo fans, just hours after it became available for download, was unforgettable. what an incredible moment!
i believe it was white noise who was on the net at the party, looking for new demos, and got his hands on this. i don't remember if he watched it before it was shown on the big screen/soundsystem.
i didn't go to naid 1995 expecting to see a new production that would become a demoscene classic. however, i wasn't so surprised to see such a thing come from a finnish group released at another party.
the music is great with unique samples (until we started using them ourselves :), and my favorite effect is the fire clouds (simply because of how it looks). the effects boxes were a very cool idea - if the audience doesn't cheer when you draw orange and yellow swirls on the screen, maybe they will when they're told that these are larusse fire clouds. :D

2 months world domination
I have seen this just lately since I was too young in 1995 to understand anything about the demoscene.
But I saw this some time ago and got supriced that of all the effects.
All the stuff in this demo are just Perrrrrrfect!!

I agree. The demo doesn't really do it for me, but the music lives on as one of the best demo tracks ever made.
My thumb is for the music only.
This is really awesome production. Content-wise it's weak, but it is coherent and well designed, and shows some really nice stuff and the tune rules :)
The soundtrack on this one still brings tears of joy to my eyes. Literally. :´D
Nice & impressive.. maybe a little bit boring on some points.
obvious thumb was missing
The turning point where PEZE kicked Amiga Ass.
A classic, what else needs to be said? .. and oh yeah, who can beat "7800 phong polys". Right. :D
TEH MUSIC[tm]
one of the best atmospheres ever
Addicting soundtrack. Finger up.
Watching jugi working on it on TG95 i didn't think it would be that big.. but then i saw it on the bigscreen and it was HUGE :). Better than the sum of its parts. You can tear it appart and point fingers, but as a whole it's got that confident attitude that separates an excellent demo from a merely good one.
I think most people who where born back in '95 can attest that it truly felt like world domination.
I think most people who where born back in '95 can attest that it truly felt like world domination.
I think you'll find that most people feeling the world domination were born a bit earlier than 1995, but yes: complete domination. The partyplace went apeshit when this was shown. Such a good memory.
Classic too ;)
For the music

Great stuff! Music is super, and I love those mid 90s 3d objects floating around. :)

Best demo soundtrack ever!
Too conventional and dragged out for my taste, but still catchy. I liked some of the transitions in particular, and the track is great in its own right.
Just watched it for the first time, I really like the music, and certainly would be impressed back then in 1995. Very enjoyable :)
One of the higlights from Tg95
Insanely good-looking, extremely well-polished in every aspect. And very boring.
typical boring mid-90's object show but music is just perfect. weak thumbs up only for music.
Very nice demo and marvelous sound track
The music in this demo should be the Phong shading theme song!

agreed. :D really epic soundtrack btw.
Sorry for this uber late thumb.

The music definitely drops into the category of my most favourite demoscene soundtracks ever. Graphics are great as well.
one of the few prods from its time that still look and sound so damn cool.

classic & awesome.
such polys
The shorter and final version of the soundtrack is not as known as the demo version, but awesome as well. :)
awesomeness in an exe
Awesome demo with super awesome sound track! Graphics are impressive too! Oldskool rules!
epic masterpiece from 2 decades ago.
aaahhh, the music.
one of the first demoscene related songs, which i've placed on a mixtape between "real" radio hits back then.

For its time technically great, but slow and rather boring to watch! Could have been a killer with better design!
Great music and attitude which blew me away back then. Not so great design, but that doesn't matter with THAT MUSIC!
Ooh, the horrible slow pacing and lack of sync... anything besides that is really awesome. Especially the soundtrack!
I didn't liked it back then, but I was wrong: it's pompous and slow, but presented in a very smart way to convince you everything on screen is awesome, even though the effects are probably not better than in contemporary releases. And it works!
And the tune by Jugi is still as epic today as it was in 1995.

Great demo, brilliant music.
Since when is it harder to do multiple light sources than one? :) Object spinner parade, but visuals hold together for the time. Thumb for that and the music. Plus, it has a cat.
I like this one a lot. And the music is a piece of art!
One of my all time favourite demo musics.
One of the first demos I ever saw. I love the PS1-like goraud in the beginning. Overall along the same lines as urs.
That soundtrack, those effects. <3
nice
Very nice and pleasant PC demo. Obviously the authors have taken the advantage of the PC to entertain and at the same time overpass the present-time demoscene limits.
Pleasant OST, worth to listen to.
Kiitos!

immortal!
for the music.
Oldschool
Great soundtrack and very coherent for its time.
Timeless classic and one of the best demo soundtracks ever made.
Probably watched this 500 times already.

this aged really well imo
While the music and effects themselves are quite nice, overall I found the experience a bit boring.
3D cats rulezzz!
Awesome
Oh, didn't thumb this up yet? :D
One of my favorite demotracks, and the cat model is cute. Has some nice materials too! Otherwise the usual kind of tech effects show wankery, but at least it's one of the best of the bunch.

Holy moly! Same!
Loved it when it came out, analysed the music, stole the samples, and once when Bassie and me were visiting Jeenio we slept a night with the mod looping just 'to see what would happen'. We had weird dreams.
The effect show captures the 1995 bragadocio hype perfectly.
Just so much love <3
The tune is Dope.
Who needs design when u got goods and epic music!
just gonna leave this here since it seems no one has done it yet:

Late thumb! Nice to know the names of effects. :-)
I have never enjoyed nor appreciated this demo.
I've always loved it!
How lovely. Not just because of fake poly count.
That mod <3 <3
Fantastic effects and goosebump level music! Complex standing on the shoulders of Larusse!
How many polys are in that asteroid actually? Did anyone check?
Dope, the 'miracle demo' of 1995.
This figuratively blew my socks off, as it was the first time I had ever seen "realtime Phong-shading", and it took me awhile to even believe it WAS realtime and not a pre-rendered animation!
The music seemed atmospheric and epic at the time, although it didn't really go anywhere, and just became a rhythmic background flow that supported the amazing effects.
The thing that makes this demo so impressive (at least back then), is that everything is pretty much super smooth - at least on a powerful enough a PC. The effects are huge, unseen-before (instead of boxes and donuts, this demo introduced 'shadow-mapped, phong-shaded cats' and very complicated objects instead of the typical simple box or face), they get in-your-face, as if to say "look how huge this object is" (Nooon's demo does a similar thing with a bee object).
Then there are the amazing crossfade-effects - very smooth, very beautiful, and in the end, a bit tedious as well. On a bright, old CRT monitor (15 inch perhaps), these look really cool.
On repeat viewings, things seem a bit tedious and boring, though.
The 'cat-effect' will always be eyecandy, but some of the stuff just doesn't seem that impressive anymore. I am not even talking about the amazing 'phong' stuff that can be compared to modern, textured 3D stuff - I mean things like the drawn graphics. The 'space background' is neat, but when you compare it to actual hubble nebula pictures in all their colorful glory, suddenly the space background looks like a dim, ugly, lackluster stain and nothing much more.
I wonder what the crossfade-effects would've looked like if they had done a proper rendition of a colorful space nebula.. (perhaps the space background is dim and lackluster for a reason?)
"Dope" (I wonder why they put the name of the demo in quotes in the demo) has style, it has polish, the effects look very bright, colorful and almost 'reflective' - you could almost swear some 'metallic' objects really are made of some kind of beautiful, polished metal.
My favorite bit, though, has always been the smoothly-scrolling, epic, huge opening 'Complex Media Labs' logo. It's flawless in execution, and it changes the color palette so smoothly you barely notice it (though it seems like it goes from 'blue to orange' just by basically adjusting the 'sliders' for each color simultaneously - so first blue is lessened while red is added, so it gives a more purple color, then more violet, pink - then green is added, so we get grey/brown color, then we end up in the orange range).
This thing is also -huge-, and actually has interesting location for the light source (low middle), and pretty weird textures (though you can see some flaws in the texturing if you look carefully, the letter "p"'s sides look messed up.
No other demo, game or even movie has ever since impressed me with a more interesting, better or amazing scrolling logo.
The problem with this demo is that although it has some breathtaking stuff for its time (realtime phong shading with timed shadowmap to make it look like the rings around the cat are 'reflected' is just something really cool to look at, even nowadays - maybe not a technical marvel from modern perspective, but to us artistical types, if something looks good, it looks good), it does some things a bit too slowly, some things take too long, and the last effect is a real anti-climax (just some squiggly lines that do not look like anything, turning around slowly.. is this supposed to be a spaceship? Couldn't they at least model something as interesting as a cat?), and as some people pointed out, it really doesn't have a storyline, design, or anything to keep your interest, besides just 'object-effect after object-effect' and then it ends.
If you take the 'phong-shaded turning objects' and the 'unnecessarily 28-channel music' away, what are you left with?
The 'one-melody-miracle' song doesn't even end properly, and keeps repeating itself -way- too much. It never changes its winning strategy, but just keeps plowing the same, identical structure over and over again with only minuscule changes. Changing the whole structure at some point would've been really cool.
It was a surprise to find out the song actually takes TWENTY-EIGHT channels! For this? You can do this song with two channels.. Why so much waste? It certainly doesn't sound like it's a 28-channel song, I bet you could do a decent rendition as 4-channel Amiga module and not miss anything important.
The song never ends properly, it just suddenly stops, after wearing out its welcome by repeating itself ad nauseam. It's like after coming up wit a couple of nice melodies, the musician ran out of ideas and juice, and just kept repeating the same thing - despite a small respite, the song is indeed 'pompous' and repetitive, as good as it otherwise might be.
The melody lead is also never changed, it's the same, lackluster thing for the whole duration, and if you have toyed around with analog synths and explored their vast and deep possibilities for interesting, very lively leadsounds, this is not going to sound very impressive.
Listen to things Lizardking used to do even before this demo, or the old C64 game musics, Amiga game musics.. plenty of examples of how to create an engaging song that goes to places and brings you with it. This song remains marching in place and never moves anywhere.
The thing about this demo is, it's very 'technical'. It's polished, but it lacks some innovation, it lacks quirks, it's not very 'alive', it's like 'here's a technical marvel, and that's all you get'. I would have wanted something more artistical, more in the sense of design, and perhaps even some storyline.
The scenery at the end is also extremely lackluster - it could've at least had a properly drawn pixel art, but it doesn't. How are you going to have 1995 World Domination if you can't even draw one decent picture? Yes, count the pixel art in this demo; not even one good 'pixel art' picture, just one tedious 'space background', and the rest is rendered.
Saffron: What do you mean the effects aren't that amazing and they're presented in 'convincing way'? What separates an effect from its presentation, and what exactly makes it convincing?
I thought it's exactly the other way around - this demo has no design, it only HAS 'amazing effects' - and they truly ARE amazing. But that's all there is..
I wouldn't say a demo that talks about 'world domination' while presenting some squiggly lines-object (what were they thinking here?) is taking itself too seriously, either..
Coherence? Coherence is not what makes people remember a demo. This demo is no more or less coherent or incoherent than other similar demos of the era. This point I also don't quite understand. What do you even mean by coherence, when it comes to demos? Showing a few 'rotating object'-effects and then ending is 'coherence'?
I wouldn't say the graphics are bad, I'd say they just didn't seem to have a pixel artist to draw any actual graphics - they're mostly rendered, lackluster or non-existent - the realtime-graphics are great, the background graphics are nothing too interesting, but the problem is, there really aren't "graphics" in this demo per se. No artistic pixel pictures, nothing hand-drawn, just a rendered logo, almost unedited, heavily dimmed-down conversion from some real nebula, and that's it.
I don't think this demo has 'attitude' per se - it's more like the authors wished to show off a 'technical marvel' and tried to make it look pretty with superficial glitter added to relatively low-poly-but-nice-looking objects, while a 'beautiful melody plays'.
Too bad the demo never veers anywhere from that premise, as it does that premise very well.
Analogue: How can you NOT be bored with a song with only two or three 'melodies' that repeat ad nauseam after it finally begins after making the viewer wait for minutes, just listening to rhythmic nothing? This soundtrack is not awesome, it's mediocre at best. It has some beautiful parts, but those parts are shoved down your throat so much it's like eating two big bags of syrapy chocolate and you want to vomit if you hear even one more note of that awful lead sample.
The song is also very simplistic, it doesn't deviate from a couple basic chords and simple structure, it repeats it until you're so bored, you're happy to hear something different, even though the small respite is even simpler and doesn't go anywhere.
"Dope" has some good bits, but it doesn't dare go anywhere interesting with them, and as someone said, Nooon's demo is way more interesting and daring, and its music is also more energetic and brave, and actually goes places. Plus, it has more variety. This demo is like one-trick marvel - nice to look at for awhile, but then you realize how little there is to it - the music repeats, the effects repeat without adding anything new, and in the end, you're not left with much.
The ending is also SO abrupt, that

Paras nostatus musa.xm :D hyvä pojat!
this prod just renders me intro trance. is it dope? :) the awesome tune sets the pace and matches the dynamics of the effects show - the visuals and the music live in symbosis. this should have looked great on the big screen. can't wait to hear a proper remix of the tune.
Ah, so that's where that mod's from. Demo pretty much lives up to its modern namesake. Is that how that word was used back then too?
1995 World Domination? Guess it depends on what else you've seen from that year!

Listening to the soundtrack to this demo right now, still one of the best!
this is what defined Complex to me, back in the 90s
Question: are there different versions of that demo? I build myself an old pc for enjoying 90s demoscene pr0n. It happens to be a Pentium 75 with a GUS Classic. When I watch Dope, the music definetily sounds somewhat different to what I remember from back in the days and from the recordings an yt. Sometimes background images are missing or the asteroid scene is skipped. I think the pc is not the problem, other demos, games run fine. I even tortured it with win xp for hours without any crashes. I have CDPI v0.2.
Many thanks
Many thanks
Thumb up on re-watch. I've spent the last few years almost exclusively watching 8- and 16-bit prods and I have to say this was a refreshing break. It simultaneously communicates both a sense of massive scale and devotion to minute detail that, coupled with the awesome soundtrack and sheer power of fast Pentium hardware, delivers a great experience despite it being mostly an object show. Pomp, for lack of a better word.
amnesia: You might have the party version, which can be found in the komplex directory on scene.org. The drumloop part during the Bump Glow effect is completely different, and it has an ending similar to the "Onward" music compo version, rather than the looped pattern. It's probably buggier than the release (4-15-95) version, which you can get through the download link up top.
After watching this demo, I understand why it and its soundtrack are considered epic. I love the effects, and the soundtrack delivers so well with the visuals. Really deserves to be considered one of the best demos ever done.
@grip: its the version from this site, hence I'm puzzled. Will the Gus-version make a difference?, or maybe my gus gets initialized in a wrong way (patches loaded or not loaded into the gus, idk) ...
Coming back after a quarter century and the Music is still fu**ing ACE!!!
Not only technically a good job but also aesthetically pleasant, more pleasant than Second Reality, and with great music.
larusse fire clouds and a melody that sticks. a true scene classic.
Like the music but not the instrumentation. Effects are cool. Logo at the beginning is dope.

Awesome effects, that demo was the BEST demo from 1995 (and 1996 too)
