Was there a common code base published for all these tracker variants? How come there are so many variants with roughly the same interface?

@rloaderro: not sure if joking or...

I thought it was pretty common knowledge, at least among Amiga enthusiasts, that The Ultimate Soundtracker source code was ripped/leaked and spread, which begat Soundtracker II, Noisetracker, Protracker, and so on.

@phoenix, no honestly I didn't know. Although that makes sense :).

Even I got served an Amiga demo or two when I was 9 (Budbrain 2 and Mental Hangover), it wasn't until 1995 that I attended my first party with my Amiga 1200. Somewhat poor recollection of whatever happened before that.

Phoenix: nope, the source code of Obarski's Soundtracker wasn't leaked at all, it is not known if The Exterminator of Jungle Command disassembled or patched the binary of the original version (I remember Charlie of Megaforce disassembled the preview of Soundtracker).

Unknown/DOC however didn't have the source code and patched the binary to produce his versions of the Soundtracker up to the Soundtracker IX, his Soundtracker v2.0 was based on TIP/TNM's Master Soundtracker v1.0 which was a disassembly he made of supposedly Obarski's Soundtracker v1.8 (not sure), he gave the source code to Unknown (and the source code was stolen or Unknown diffused it).

This TrashTracker v1.0 is based on NoiseTracker v1.1.

Mahoney disassembled DOC Soundtracker to create Noisetracker, as told in
The Story of NoiseTracker by Pex Mahoney Tufvesson
Noisetracker fyller 25 år

@hitchhikr: ok, disassembled is what I meant by "ripped". I forgot how the exact origin story went, so thanks for clearing that up.

hollowman: Noisetracker (at least v1.1) was based on Mnemotron's SoundTracker v2.3

Lol, so what is the original (the only 1st source) of all those copies ? 😃
