That's plain awesome ♥ Color, sound, setup, roughness, everything! It's always nice to be personally greeted =) The text2speech thing is meh though (good/bad depending on the daytime).

Loved the TTS as ending.
Nice mood all along too!

yt/video? can't run it since no chrome (and FF won't do only a black screen here)
The text2speech is surely a something to be debated. I haven't seen it used before so i thought I can give my intro a little extra-edge with it. ;)

Here is a not 100% perfect video capture: http://homecoded.com/prods/hc-02/spelunking2k_1080p.mp4

nice colors and a nice mood (a video is better than a black screen ^^) and what HellMood said - but with extra thumbs for the poetic ending :D

Great follow up to Mysterious Monorail!
... or maybe Mysterious Monorail is the follow up prod.

FWIW I've been willing to use the built-in TTS for over a year but didn't find a fitting compo /audience for it.

very stylish, and also thumb for 2k js!

@p01: Well, Spelunking was first. :D The original version was black and white. I transformed that then into "Mysterious Monorail" for JS1K. Later, with the experiences from "Mysterious Monorail", I was able to improve Spelunking visually and acoustically by still staying below 1K. I think this is also my first Bytebeat piece that actually sounds like (almost) proper "music".

But 1K was not enough for Outline, and since I always wanted to make an intro with text, I added the text-overlay and tts.

I thought it was the end of the demo, but wait... there was more! I loved the text-to-speech + poetry.

still don't know how to use JS for demo coding... but maybe someday I will know... :)

technically impressive, some nice moments with very nice visuals. too long for me in an artistic sense though.

Black screen only on FF38.1 and IE11. Only garbage on screen with Chrome 43 and Opera 29. Work at really slow frame rate on Waterfox 38 despite a 2500K @ 4.7Ghz. How did you get a smooth frame rate on the video linked here? Older, hacked version of Chrome?
sucks added on the 2015-05-21 19:54:28 by ramon ramon
Waterfox is based on Mozilla like Firefox and is crazy slow when it comes to implicit globals inside evals.You could download the source-version (https://github.com/homecoded/demo/blob/master/HC02-spelunking-2k-by-homecoded.html) from github and run it (without the compressing magic). Without eval, implicit globals are no problem and the intro should run fine ... even on Mozilla.

The prod uses SpeechSythesis which is not available on FF and IE. That's the blackscreen. It should work fine on Chrome 43 as long you don't run it locally. It uses PNG-bootstrap so the demo file loads itself as an image and local file-loading is normally prohibited. Give Chrome Canary a try. That is what I am using. What OS are you on? Your machine should work wonderfully with the intro.

I get around 15-20fps on my 2.1GHz Craptop. To get a smooth video (30fps) I had to render single images out and combine them to a video. I have not linked the video in the official link box because it's not accurate and I'm not happy with it. It gives you an idea how the intro is supposed to look, though.

I actually had the problem of heavy frame rate problems occasionally, too. With a youtube tab open in the background I can somewhat reproduce it. Other websites may have similar effects.

Nice. Voxels and colors.

Could've used a tad more design IMHO, even if that means sacrificing a few more bytes. Good amount of content for the size, though!

Excellent colour scheme and scenery and minimalistic tune.

@homecoded

You were right. When viewing the demo online, Chrome and Opera works great. It's sad the only browser capable of viewing this demo offline is Waterfox

@ramon:

Chrome works offline as well. You need to activate local file loading, though. It's a security feature. http://www.chrome-allow-file-access-from-file.com/
