great work
Smashing? ;) Finally a new landmark pc demo. Not sure about the music though.
Fairlight did it again ... epic!
pretty neat code, although the first scene(s) are incredibly boring..
I'm with toxie.
But I liked it very much anyways - besides some little flaws.

Awesome! Really! And the music fits perfectly imho!
interesting tech, not as interesting art
very nice!
respect, and like the glass effects..flt does it again, but maybe a amiga release next year?
There are the revision PC demos and there is this fairlight demo. My first impression was, this is one league above the others. It is taking one idea and exploring it in a depth that other demos often lack. It builds up, never gets distracted from the main idea and so delivers more than i ever expected it would. Superb work.
one of the most important / successful indie musicians of all time cooperating with one of the most important / successful demogroups of all time. this is amazing by that merit only.
and then things started exploding.
and then things started exploding.
Really awesome release. Great direction, great soundtrack and a really impressive real time raytracer. Smash sure knows his shit!
Smash text messaged Gargaj "I am to hangover can you get on the stage for me?"
Nice acceptance speech for winning the PC demo compo! :) Thumb!
Nice acceptance speech for winning the PC demo compo! :) Thumb!
I don't upgrade my GPU for games anymore, I do it for FLT demos <3
Love it!
First I was like -_- then I was like o_O
What Salinga said.
Wow. Just wow. Runs like a slideshow on my computer, but I still love it!
I love realtime raytraciing. Very, very cool :-)!!!
This was absolutely not my cup of tea. The music ruined a lot for me. It felt like re-watching and old fairlight/cncd demo now just put into this raytracer. It really was boring and not that good looking imo. Direction was indde the best thing, but not even superior directing can save this from a piggie.
I think this was to show how a "fairlight demo" looks like without destop directing. Awesome tech though! :)
Well, due to some pouet fuckup... here is my thumb!
Jänistä lattiaan.
(ps. I really feel like the title should be 5 Faces like in the demo)
(ps. I really feel like the title should be 5 Faces like in the demo)
Also this is the most professional looking fairlight demo since agenda for me (for better or worse), and I really appreciate the choice of music genre.
Too slow here. YouTube, please!
Diffuclut to judge a demo who can't run in real time on a mid range GPU..
awesome music!
bounce those rays! Perfect viewing.
completely blew me away!
Impressive.
too bad i only have a gtx670 :(
66.4MB. you gotta be kidding me!
Apart from that: Exploding stuff was really strong, generic mirroring city flyby was rather not. All in all pretty impressive

Here's the thumb
Crazy! Awesome music and visuals...
Blew me away. Fantastic-looking stuff.
So, this is a fantastic technical achievement from Fairlight again, but unlike all the previous ones, this one just leaves me empty. The fluid stuff and the bokeh and the breaking effects and probably even the raytracing itself is really impressive, but the entire just becomes boring for me very quickly. The music doesn't really help either :-)
Technically awesome of course, but like Sesse said, something is indeed missing this time. The first minutes get boring real fast, and the usual stellar design isn't there. Needs more Destop? That said, the latter half was good fun.
not a fan of the music but the visuals are amazing in all aspects.
Very nice. The only nitpick is that I wouldn't have let the camera go so close to the "glass" objects, as the glass refraction+partial reflection rendering kind of seemed lacking in closeups. Or at least it felt so to me, having rendered raytraced scenes with ridiculously high recursion factors in past. But YMMV.
well i only seen youtube version here; and i quite don't get it. i mean, bite me if you must, but what exactly this prod was supposed to push? it's like ALL the corny rendering artefacts here, leaked edges of post DOF and aliasing and straight reflections and problems because of casual geometry in the city scene and temporal artefacts and all that jazz.
or is it youtube video that was just captured with poor settings, and it is possible to run the demo with some kind of 'dream' setup without downsampled targets or something?

Technically interesting. Some pretty scenes (a bit generic though, like looking at a collection of tech. demos) -- and some scenes were plain awful in terms of geometry.
looks fantastic and sounds fantastic. nothing more to say.
great music, great design, and just wow...
Love it! Which decomposition algorithm was used for the fracturing?
lovelovelovelovelove!
Finally, a demoscene prod keeping up with modern motion graphics. Pure awesome.
Finally, a demoscene prod keeping up with modern motion graphics. Pure awesome.
Each time I watch this I like it even more
Boring as hell and horribly slow... still I don't dare to be the first to thumb this down! :p
nVidia, DICE, Crytek & Epic demos aren't nearly as cool.
hmm... Looks buggy! Both on my videocard and youtube.
I don't like the music style, I found the intro part extremely longish and uninteresting, gets better after the city part but still will not make it to my list of 'must show everybody'.
I liked the cubicle chaos! Music not that much though.
MsK`comparison above, highlight EXACTLY what is basically wrong with this whole production, imo.
Cloudkicker !

Amazing!
Fairly what the other guys said.
Very cool effects and good Music :) Worthy Winner!
excellent
I'm not getting the same impact others are from this and not really seeing what's so special, especially as a follow up to Smash's previous demos (which were genuinely groundbreaking!).
Greyscale demos tend to look unfinished to me and I've always considered it a lazy design option. Personally, I still consider Smash's earlier demos such as Track One in a much higher league.
The breaking glass was excellent though to be fair.

If only I had a prototype of GTX 890 :(
The falling liquid skull is very convincing.
you ain't need no visual with such a STUNNING soundtrack.
Music was annoying and disliked the greyish and somewhat dull theme. Not for me, but congrats for the win nevertheless.
My cup of tea
Does it run on my two year old machine? Barely.
Is it a fantastic demo? Absolutely!
Is it a fantastic demo? Absolutely!
Strange mix of some fairly ugly bits and some of the best things I've ever seen in a demo. Instant thumb up though!
Holy shit! Skulllz were just mad.
Wow
Wow
O_o--b
(_O o) so cool demo.
yes! beauty, reflections, mirros, glass. cool music too
(heart) Cloudkicker!
Mixed feelings... Surely the tech is awesome, but the soundtrack felt so disconnected many times and there were a few boring scenes as well... But as gargaj said... then things started exploding.
Breaking effects are just insane.
Breaking glass
nice tech
really beautiful, and original music as well
dominance
fucking cool. loved the music.
wow
wow this was really cool
now i just need a top end gpu
now i just need a top end gpu
It's been a while since my jaw was dropping for a pc demo... Wow...
@smash, i was not thinking of it at the time, but massive props for beeing at revision, ant gdc!
awesome prod, respect! keep it up.
(the glass still is a tiny bit to unrealstic for me ... but i might be the only one ;)

Really impressive. Not sure this style of music fits a demo, to be honest, though I love the genre usually, but it was a good tune in its own right.
Oh yes.
what Sesse said
Good choice for the music and very cool rendering!
Awesome!! Great music and rendering. Unfortunately, I don't saw it live :/
some nice tech stuff, but all in all not the best demo by flt for me :-D
a big hug to pal/offence for his flawless pc-demo-compo victory :-D
a big hug to pal/offence for his flawless pc-demo-compo victory :-D
Totally blocked the computer at loading even the Ctrl-Alt-Del comb could not help, had to reset it like a barbarian :(
Thumb up after watching it on YouTube (as i said in my previous comment, the demo totally blocked my PC) for the awesome physic effects...
Just a thought...Why not doing video clips instead of coding as most of people have to watch the PC prods on YouTube now ? :)

Another flt demo, another big bag of mixed emotions :D
There's some amazing parts in this one, especially the liquids, the skull, and the breaking glass (which is right up there at the top of the "holy fuck" moments in the demoscene for me). And I liked the music.
Then there are the other bits, like the intro which felt a bit empty + unfinished somehow. And the DOF effect, which looked stunning in some parts but cheap + fake in others. And the glass pyramid, which looks somehow wrong (not sure why, either it's the refraction not being quite right or the lack of reflections / fresnel).
But then I have to take a step back, and think about those criticisms in context: I'm criticising it for things like this when no other demo even comes close on the tech side. Looking at the demo as a whole, it's solidly mind blowing.
Really looking forward to the blog post on this one smash, as raytracing is an area of real interest to me lately. I'm very interested to hear how the skull/liquids part was done particularly, and also the diffraction in the broken glass (multiple internal reflection rays or cunning fake? I'd be just as happy to learn there's a big RGB rainbow right behind the camera :D)

Yeah uh...
Music was not my deal, but nevertheless this rocks!
Really awesome!
So, I've just realized that even buying myself an Alienware rocket with 2x GTX-555 SLI on board, I can't keep up with Smash. Fuck :) This demo is visually stunning. Music is not my cup of tea, though.
Awesome!!
Started very boring, but rocked the world after some minutes... Nice one!
I have mixed feelings about this one.
I like the opening, the ending is big, but I have a problem with the build up.
Once we see the whole city, it looks a bit cheesy, like Povray shots from the 90s. But more importantly, the pyramid scene is loses the tension: it's long with not much happening, it feels disconnected from the music, and at some point the demo lost my attention and I started focusing on all the aliasing and refraction artifacts instead.
This said, the slowmo crashing glass is eyecandy in all it's glory. :)

Awesome "gay-tracing", no idea what tombstone of a gfx board you need to run this properly... but hey, I'm an Amiga zealot and it sure as hell was an epic show :D
Downside, in a way, was the fact that the soundsystem (or its setup or the venue structure itself) wasn't cut out for the heavy e-guitarr mid-range sound so it got really noisy and messy in my ears. Actually this soundtrack deserved a "Marshall wall" with the amplifiers set to an "english configuration" ;)

i dont get the complaints about the soundtrack...
i cant imagine another type of music be more fitting when you break shitloads of glass than a cymbal orgy in a brilliant metal track.
also for some personal reasons this triggers emotions and feelings i rarely have when watching demos, which makes this way more than just a good demo to me.

Finally no dot particles ;o) Soundtrack is fitting, but not my cup of tea. Technically the best nowdays.
A demo out of this world
massive. but didn't touched me.
Not exactly my cup of tea but impossible to thumb down. The music,. I don't know. Liked the visauls though.
Distorted soundtrack, messy look, size bloat, doesn't run on my system at all. Namevoting must die.
Amaaaaziiing soundtrack!
framerate killer. nice glass
Ossom things and not so ossom things in it but definitely a thumb up.
Pushing the envelope yet again :). Some really jaw-dropping scenes in there. I can definitely understand that it was hard to maintain full framerate in all of those scenes. Well-deserved winner.
<ironie>
pls, wtf .. more crap smash, you can do crappier !!!
</ironie>
nah, well done .. the track is awesome..
reminds me abit of alter bridge ;)

Excellent demo! Love the music and the visuals.. especially when everything just breaks and explodes. Amazing stuff! YUUUUMMIE! :)
yes
Smash, you sneaky BASSSTARD, you said you didnt have anyfing when I spoke to you on friday niight ;) Awesome shit as always!
don't think this thing could run on my PC at home... Have give a try, but getting some .dll errors, I guess my card do not support this insane demo! ;-)
Lovely graphics, but indeed feels a bit empty.
Also it's just whitted-style raytracing from the looks of it. Global illumination would be much more impressive. :D

Alright, but of course it's still worth a thumb!
crappy usage of raytracing: "we like to break glasses".
Visually neat, but I miss some more direction and feeling for scenes.
FUCK YEAH, Smash!
64k style )
Cool
The visuals are okay, but the music does not really fit with the visuals and the distortion is kind of annoying.
I was a bit meh but then glass started to shatter. :) From then on everything has been great.
1st part is boring, 2nd part is cool. A piggie.
Really liked in on biiig screen. The music isnt really my case, but realytime raytracing is <3 for me!
Here's my YT capture for those who want a non-stuttering FullHD one with much less stair effects and better sync :)

yes!
Great atmosphere and tension building! Love it.
It's been a long time since a demo wow-ed me like this one. Coder pr0n and beautiful music!
Quite some deadly baking here and there, to kick off such a beautiful demo! Outstanding, except for the music which didn't make it for me. FLT got it :)
cool effects, also if I'm a bit overstrained by them. music is ok. kind of too indie for me. :D
So, it starts waaay too slow, imho. I was about to mentally give it a piggy only, when the second half of it started to kick in, and how it kicks! Really great stuff visually (and obviously coding wise, I guess) and especially a very nice tune. Well done, dear sirs!
Awesome !
I'm in no position to critique, but if i was, I'd pick on the theme. I mean, why a skull? why a heart? If you're trying an heros & tanatos theme it should have been pushed further. Or if it's just for the sake of using loads of polys, why not use abstract shapes ?
I could also be picking on the fact that it doesn't run on my 10yrs old OS. But like the rest, it'd be silly to criticize when it's already so much above the rest.

Slideshow as expected.
The reflections and refractions look fake and the rendering has a lot of artefacts (and some temporal shit going on), but all is saved when shit starts breaking :) Also, liquids are very nice
I didn't even bother trying to melt my gfx card on this one, so straight-to-video for me. I felt the city scenes let things down a little bit (what Zavie said) - but I loved the skull bits and the breaking glass stuff was jaw-dropping. Liked the music - it suited the second half of the demo a bit better than the first...
loved it!
Very much a technical showoff, but there's a time and place for them, too :)
awesome technical pr0n (btw i guess it doesn't work on everybody's computer), a little bit boring at the beginning but looking great from the middle to the end of the demo :)
the only one thing I can regret on this prod is the very cheesy "cute but misplaced" heart at the end of the demo :3

Dazzling!
Good show. Realtime raytracing still isn't quite ready for prime-time, but it works very well for a one-shot demo. Or five :)
Smash + Cloudkicker = <3
Solid production with awesome music.
video is great indeed, but realtime is teh shit !
Argh... I really want to dig this demo more...
- Exploding stuff looks really really nice
- Fluids look really nice
- "Snaps of doom" skull ;)
- Music is not my taste, but that's probably more a specific taste thing, however the sound didn't seem to play well in the E-Werk
- Somewhat weird/boring geometry (I guess this is due to reduce the polygon count for the RTRT)
- Edges flipping over on camera pans as well as faces being clipped/too close to the camera - that really annoyed me, when watching it the first time
Don't get me wrong. it's a really great demo, however I'm missing the more "artistic" feel that you guys have had in many of the recent years demos.
Worthy winner? Hmm... difficult, those explosions look good and was the best effect in the compo - even with a wall of midrange guitars, which I don't really appreciate (yes, exactly the same way that some people do not like drum'n'bass or other specific sounds and genres :) )

- nice prod & fx
- music is ok
- graphics is a bit to boring
- the first sequence to long & static
at all is not the best fairlight demo and the mood is to cold & clean. raytracing is to perfect and perfection sucks ;)

Started slowl but in the end it showed its greatness.
Piggy prod until it started to rule the fucking compo
After a few days I come to the conclusion this is piggy. It just doesn't have enough soul to touch me in any way.
Left me a bit cold until things started breaking :). Technically unmatched though, so a thumb up is definitely in order.
great visuals and while some people consider initial slow pace a sign of weakness, I sure like the setup for the big show.
and extra thank you for choice of music, it was so fresh.

I love when demos or intros look like they could only have been released in the year they were released.
i'm waiting for the GMA950 port!
but i give a thumb in advance as i trust smash's abilities to deliver that :))

Pretty awesome once stuff started exploding. The part before that didn't do much for me, somehow.
nah
I had written a very long message why your demo is shit, but the demon of pouet ate it. Oh well...
Just joking. This is fab! I don't particularly like the music but I think after the tenth time it will grow on me. I'm wondering how much of this can be done with the traditional pipeline - much faster but at 90% of visual accuracy? I'm talking about reflections/isosurfaces (m.cubes? - there are triangles there) and the bounce off the floor "physics". Or is it real rigid bodies? You see, that's the problem I have with this demo. It uses amazing technology but is oh so restrained. A lot of the time you see a big mess (in a good way) of super shiny tetrahedra/other solid bits that, as far as we can tell, could be doing some sort of environmental mapping of a static geometry - and party like it is 1999. Now here is an idea: mix the textures of uncovering static (diffuse) with five faces (reflective) and you have the ultimate winner.

godverdom.
The soundtrack absolutely makes this one, I love it! Just the right blend of melancholy and hopefulness with a grungy, ballsy tone. It takes all the good bits from the "shoegazing" genre and just makes it work with zero bullshit. Thank you for introducing me to Cloudkicker! I need to thoroughly check out his stuff now.
As for the visuals, I really like the subtle use of colour and well thought-out direction. The broken heart coming back together was a bit of a cheesy move but.. ah well. Goes well with the song. Stay classy guys - ignore the haters!

Great soundtrack, great graphics. Maybe a little ahead of it's time, in the sense that the low res and aliasing on some scenes is too distracting in some parts.
Fucking amazing!
technically impressive due to the top notch shaders. i love the soundtrack, which is also waaaaay better at home when there's less soundwall/bass as if it's Metallica's Sgt Anger album :) only slight critique is the cameras are so-so.
beautiful visuals and glad there are other cloudkicker fans!
This is a demo. Pushing the boundary in a new direction again. Wonderful. The music may also be great but in no way fits the visuals.
Love the music, nice visuals.
Great music, and spectacular visuals! As others have stated, a little slow at the start...
what navis said.
the music is not my cup of tea.
and some aliasing/flickering was quite annoying in some scenes.

WHOOA! what a blast - like literally! unbelievable code madness and a blasting track which is not the usual dub-wub for once.
I don't even begin to understand how this can possibly work.
Great glassware, mediocre design and music.
Today I know the scene is not dead.
This just took my breath away.
Music is half of the demo, and I absolutely love the music. Rock is my primary taste, far before all the usual demostyle music, which I can still appreciate. So this is a awesome surprise for me.
As for the visuals...I now know why it was worth it to buy a 670. Okay, it's somehow leaving people behind. But demos have always been about pushing the envelope. This thing shows me things I have never seen. I thank and salute this.
Thank you. You made my day.

fine demo, and extra bonus for the music being non-mainstream standard demoscene electro crap
someone complained about the music not fitting... maybe that's your initial reaction now, but i think after you've watched this a few times, you'll think it couldn't be any other way

Wow, it needs DirectX 11. Frak my old Windows XP Pro. SP3 machine. Music OK.
First part -_- second part O_O ,great soundtrack.
Technically eminent, which more than earns it a thumbs up, but I felt like this one didn't have the soul of some of the earlier FLT|CNCD works (Frameranger/particle trilogy/spacecut). Maybe it's because the music wasn't my cup of tea, but I felt no real emotional impact from the scenes in this demo.
I. e. Here I'm watching the shattering pyramid and thinking "Oh wow, physics and tranceparency at the same time. I wonder if the glass done with raymarching..." whereas, with something like Uncovering Static, thoughts like that only come after I get over the initial feelings of "Oh my god, this universe is so beautiful and strange."
That's really all I can offer in the way of description.

Well done progress on realtime raytraced stuff. Smash, in case the reflections and refractions were not fake, how about the physics in the falling pieces?
I agree with kurli that in some places the reflections look fakish. But, fake or not to fake, its anyway one of the best looking demos for a long time. Keep on rocking :).

finally some guitars (yes, BassGuitar aswell) in a demo again, thanx for that!
else what Salinga said.

impressive visuals, i liked it a lot.
Technically awesome, but I did like others better.
nice, but fairlight has definitely released better demos.
nice but not great, still a thumb up of course
Technically impressive and nice "un-demoish" music = Demo <3
Looks beautiful, but it's not very exciting. Too slow pace.
A high quality prod even though I'm not sure if I like some of the design/direction choices.
better without "music"
solid coder pr0n, is it any wonder the cubes-in-the-skull effect looked best in this demo?
my favorite in the compo.Great music!
Symphony of destruction! That prod is really awesome. Great job!
fantastic!
the technical achievement is indeed impressive. the demo on the other hand is quite boring until the fluid/explode-everything part. Still deserve a thumb up.
Very lovely. Skullcubes were demoshock to brain. <3 <3
Impressive coding techniques... quite boring demo though
excellent work!
Now waiting for the blogpost.
Now waiting for the blogpost.
At first, kinda boring with a bunch of reflective surfaces, but then it started doing... stuff. Nice work.
Wow that's really what I call pushing the envelope
Rules! Great Soundtrack, too!!
an awesome prod with an awesome soundtrack! hope to watch it in realtime by 2020 though
Really awesome fx. Future generations may even watch that in constant FullHD 60fps :-)
high level!
BANG! CRASH! SMASH!
fantastic demo, fantastic write up, and great music, realtime awesomeness!
looking forward to the day when this stuff scales for mid-end game gfx cards and the oculus rift. it could probably already be implemented for particular special game scenes and small objects.
I especially enjoyed the cubes and the wineglass
Everything was already said here! Here's my late thumb.
Ooh that's shiny :D
Other notes, worth mentioning it doesn't work well with nvidia sli at the moment, got a pair of 680Ms here and one was at 99% while the other was at 2% load. My other comment is that I don't know how you're detecting possible resolutions but it's a bit off, on my 2560x1440 display I can have 2560x720 or 2560x1024 apparently.
Other than that, shiney shiney very well done sir :D

I don't feel I can add more to the nice comments so far, the only thing that got me thinking was how it takes me a bit to render such a scene in Blender (for one frame) - and this is running rather smoothly at 1080p on a 7950 - holy shit :)
Didn't give this its well-deserved thumb yet. Well, here it is ! Though i'm not convinced that bricks are the final solution to spatial primitive organization on the gpu yet, it seems to work well for certain purposes. This demo was really inspirering and brought something fresh, sth that you haven't seen before ! Thanks for making this, its exactly whats got and keeps me in the demoscene. And please consider going 64k again, using phyre has that i-use-the-code-from-work taste ;) otherwise we might run you over at next rev
Who needs benchmark software for graphics cards, if you have Fairlight demos? ;)
66 MB ! at now a video could be a better artefact comparing to data needs.
oops, sorry, i thought i read that, but i just had a look again and in fact the article says its a showcase for your raytracer (not phyre as i falsely remembered) ... are you aware of that 3-pages revision article in german c't magazine ?
cloudkicker rules my day.
Shiny ... although the music is not my kind of taste.
Impressive visuals. Not knowing much about the tech going on here, might actually reduce the joy of watching it. The music isn't mindblowingly cool, but there's definitely an impressive amount of time being put into both the visuals and the audio, nevertheless. So a well deserved thumb up! And I agree with Pap on you guys going 64k again. 64klang seem to be good to go, judging from Virgill's executable entry from Nordlicht. There's practically "just" the last 48 bytes to stuff content into, and you have yourself a nice 64k ;)
not fan of the music, but those visuals !!
the breaking glass part made me go wow. rest needed some color.
*Bump*
The first three minutes were hella boring, but man did it take off immediately afterwards! Can't say I was a fan of the music, but it did fit. Visual themes less so, but who cares, they exploded anyway.
wow. Fan of the music, and those visuals !!
I apparently didn't thumb this up. I must correct this!
soulless and too shiny, music wasn't that bad
Thumb up for the tech, and double thumb up for cherri "troll" kandler's stupid comment.
Impressive graphics and cool effects! I really like the style.
I feel like the demo is a bit too long (considering what you have to show), but it's minor complaint.

I see smash has lived up to his name. :p Nice reflections and excellent soundtrack but I missed some actual colours here. Still a technical and sound thumb, though. :)
Wtf??? No thumbs up for this shit yet? This demo is powerful!
Impressive.
Impressive.
Where is my thumb? Awesome demo!
I was convinced that I had already thumbed this up. Crazy. Anyway, for the awesome design+technique.
Mind blown.....
7/10

Looks almost true photorealism!! :D
I got min ~35 fps at 1024x768 running Win 8.1 x64 with i5-2500K@4.5GHz and EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti Classified@OC version-stock.

it runs fine on my gtx970 :)
All time best demo... never seen better glass material :)

Belated obvious thumb up.

I got min ~51 or 52 fps at 1024x768 running Win 10 x64 with i7-4790K@4.4GHz and NEW EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti SC+@OC version-stock. :D
I had i5-2500K and GPU GTX 780 Ti Classified - look my past result at 2015-04-07 20:25:37. ;)

not sure what to make of this
Great visuals in second part (good in first). Great music. Overall - really good.
Striking, with a great live music track.

(Windows 10 64Bits, 16GB RAM, NVidia GTX 1660 Super 6GB VRAM, driver 441.08)
Runs fine here, Win10 x64, 16 GB, GTX 2060 (also 6 GB), driver 445.87. Did you try different resolutions and fullscreen on/off?
The resolution selection dialog doesn't even show up :'(
Music is not my cup of tea, but the tech is great :)
Finally able to watch this in realtime, full-hd in 60fps! (Titan X)
Rocks for sure.
Rocks for sure.
Visuals still impressive in a post-RTX world. Music still impressive in a post-rock world. ;)
