I don't know. Is there something with the GBA that makes it hard to write a generic raytracer test scene on it? The scene itself isn't particularly impressive, beautiful or interesting and I'm a bit hesitant to thumb it up just because of the platform.

If it was some sort of realtime it would be interesting; ie. the platform would make it more impressive, but for a procedural image it just takes longer than on a faster platform (probably much longer with the lack of native floats), and the scene itself it's a really basic and generic. What it the render time btw?

30 to 60 seconds are fucking impressive! So it's not floating point then. I once did a straight port of a regular raytracer to the GBA, and it took like half an hour to calculate the image: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/tNV1L9cexfs9tAHUMgKq4A?feat=directlink

And even that would have some complications. I had an issue of the stack growing too large and writing all over the heap :)

During hacking I always compiled multiple versions of the intro, execution speed varies wildly with ARM vs. Thumb and code location (IWRAM/EWRAM/ROM).

When compiling as Thumb, a few selected functions were compiled as ARM nevertheless because Thumb has no equivalent for the SMULL instruction, and I've thrown out all libraries, including libgcc.

What I finally submitted (ran out both of time and energy, with the size limit not reached) was an ARM version that runs entirely from IWRAM (that is, the fastest I had). Rendering time is somewhere around 43 seconds (I think). -O3 doesn't gain much speed over -Os (about 3 seconds or so).

It's using fixed point arithmetics all over the place. And it's compressed using exomizer2. I tried also aPLib, and the BIOS LZSS depacker, but with larger binaries, exomizer2 beats the shit out of them.
