- Best from Gerp 2024 for me. No idea how any of it is done, so I'm assuming it's magic.

- Wanted to give a thumb for the effort on such a horrible platform, but on the other hand it's again such a horrible platform that I don't want to be seen as encouraging anyone to do more stuff for it...

- 40k Amiga OCS/ECS A Murder Of Scrolls by Andromeda [web]
- I liked it. A demo that's clearly aware of the hype, but chooses to ignore it and does its own thing, rather than taking the deconstructive route. (Not saying it was bad when Kewlers did it, though.)

- Makikg a political demo is a bit like the paradox of writing poetry: What's deliberately left out is often more impactful than what you put into it.

- demo Amiga OCS/ECS Eon by The Black Lotus [web]
- I certainly have high expectations on future releases from the people trashtalking the tech behind this.
I like the comparison with Hardwired, because it well illuminates the key difference between a demo like this, and a demo like that.
Hardwired is all about the tech, and it's very explicit with what's happening at every point in the demo. Don't fully grasp what you're seeing? No worries, there's a text on the screen summarising the technical details of every scene, to make sure you don't accidentally miss a coding achievement.
In Eon, the tech is not part of the showcase, except indirectly (though I could argue the cube was a bit explicitly showy). Immediately after seeing this I thought of Booze Design's 2005 gem of a demo, "Tsunami", which some people had similar complaints about. "Where is the tech??". Of course it was there if you knew where to look, but the demo was so mature and confident it didn't feel the need to focus on each and every transgression of made limits, instead relying on understatement and subtlety to convey the achievements to those who would get it.
As I recall HCL eventually posted a list of all the world-first and records in the demo which seemed to dampen the "wheres mah tech??" criticism somewhat.
But just as an exercise, why don't the good Amiga coders who've complained about the lack of technical achievement here (I've seen a couple of you) just get together and release a proof-of-concept demonstrating that this sort of thing isn't hard? Should be a fairly quick effort, right? - isokadded on the 2019-05-17 07:18:22
