Has anyone here tried printing a 3D model in Shapeways or a similar service? If so is it good enough to render christmas presents? :P

yea, I've done that - was quite surprised by the high quality. Some of them even print in colour :D Straight from .obj

I've uploaded a test model and I've noticed the preview 3d render had visible flat faces. Is that too noticeable on the final thing?

I know an artist who uses them and has been pleased

Also got an assemble-your-own robot model for a friend there and he liked it.

Good enough? Sure. Enough time to get it printed and shipped to you before christmas? Hell no :)

what gloom said - you're too late bro :( printing takes like ages.

if you are crazy enough, get yourself "pepakura" and fold your models by yourself :) (like suggested by 4mat, but in any complexity ;)

pro: what do you mean, "complexity"? Just do what the demoscene does best: make LOTS of cubes! :)

Those makerbot things usually only print in plastic. And chocolate.

Printing services?! People insists in giving the fish instead of the fishing rod. Damn capitalists. :(

Damn capitalists! :(

I hate it when firms give people the services they want.

In related news, I *hate* fishing.

Good point Dangaufer. But if I were giving my mom a present, for example, I'd give her the art, not the means, because she has no time for that. Well, except beading, and she chooses her own beads . . .

Just saw this shapeways-site and would like to order a model for my desk at the office - maybe the cube from 'fr-041: debris.'?

Maybe one of the Farbraush guys can upload it to that site?
