The price was the same last year, what's so magical about it this time? :o

After last year's fiasco with the "extreme graphics" compo, might we see a change this year, ie oldskool and newskool executables? And pleeease only allow EXECUTABLES in the compo, it's kinda lame to allow straight up images. It's not very extreme.
The extreme graphics compo needs changes, totally agreed. I'm interested to hear what people thought about BP's 4k executable graphics compo: success, ok, fail?

Looks like you might also need to install some supermarket checkouts on stage if you are going to have another priCe giving ceremony...

So, Assembly does a 7k demo categorie?

it would be really sweet to have executable gfx allowed in the xtreme gfx compo in ASM2010!

Just sent a proposition for a seminar. I don't think we'll be doing an oldskool demo this year but at least I could be talking about our older productions :)

Are the oldskool-platforms going to be the same this year, or will there be changes?

visy: you really should do an oldskool-demo, I'll buy you a beer if you make one ;)

abyss: Well the said compo gave us Burj Babil. So just like iq I too would love to see it at Assembly.

Britelite, the compo rules are draft, so they may change. That said, oldskool platforms are most likely the same as last year.

If you have suggestions, feel free to shoot them over to help us make the compo better (as should everybody else too!) --> compos2010 AT assembly DOT org

Britelite: only if it's a co-op with you :)

So, would anybody mind telling me exactly what was badly wrong with the ASM 2009 Extreme Graphics compo rules compared to the BP10 Executable compo rules?

BP
- Entries will be run on the competition PC and must be delivered as executable in a .ZIP file (or other archive), just as entries for the PC 4k intro competition.

ASM
- The picture must be an executable file or it must be showable on supported desktop or oldskool platforms or with the computer you are bringing with you. Check the Oldskool and Desktop platform rules.
- If your entry runs on Desktop platforms, the size must be 4096 bytes or less.
- If your entry runs on Oldskool platfoms, the size must be 40960 bytes or less.

So, get rid of Oldskool platforms and everything is nice and dandy, or am I missing something?

abyss: no, it was purely the 40k limit for oldskool platforms.

The logic (?) behind the name was "ticket for the types of people who went to the first ASMs" i.e. oldschool.

ah!

hey, in some weird way that actually makes sense.

The problem last year was that people couldn't figure out how to vote, since there were 4k/oldskool/nonexecutable entries all rolled into one compo. The simple (and in my opinion, best) alternative would be to split them up into two categories, "oldskool gfx" and "4k graphics", completely removing nonexecutable entries.
Yep, that refreshes my memory (way too many parties melded into one stream of consciousness). The goal with the extreme music and gfx compos was to create a category that would re-vitalize the oldskool graphics and music compos as they were stagnating (low amount of entries, same small set of people submitting entries every year). That is NOT to say that there weren't good entries, but the future wasn't looking too bright. Obviously, the end result wasn't optimal.

There wasn't that much backlash on the Extreme music compo that allows both oldskool and modern platforms as well as protracker modules, so I guess that can be kept pretty much as is.

I see the following options:
1) Revert back to the oldskool gfx compos and kill the 4k executable.
2) Keep the modern executables, no compo for gfx on oldskool platforms
3) Keep both platforms, but has to be executable on both (big question: what would be fair file size for an oldskool platform?)

The option 4), have two compos instead of one, is not really an option because our schedule overflowing already and I'd expect to see <10 entries per compo (i.e. not a compo worth sustaining).

Thanks for the feedback!

well, out of the alternatives listed, four being impossible, three is definitely the best one, allthough not really ideal. And from what I've seen the last few years, there are less compos now than ever before (extreme compos, mobile and flash merging) so I don't see why it would be impossible to keep both.
Three seems best to me too.. Fourth would be better though. It doesn't matter that much when the compo is held, it could be at daytime or late night like some other less popular (awww :<) ones.
