PC demos on MacOSX Leopard? |
| category: general |

Is there a way? VMware can't handle 3D acceleration at all. |
if it's an intel macbook, you could just install a second partition of XP |
Or people could port their stuff to platforms other than Windows.

BootCamp ftw. |
Shenlon, BootCamp won't handle 3D acceleration at all either iirc. Or, let's say, in a f*cking bad way. |
well, i've been able to watch basically any new demo under xp on my mac so i'd say it works fine. |

I was talking about the Macbook dodke, got one too for one year, i must admit the GMA chip ain't that much of a powerful one. Running some demos ain't even worth a try. |

we need more GMA900 friendly demos! |
irokos: that's more the fault of the GMA900, not the bootcamp...
anyways even as a mac zealot i have to say for demos: XP or video are the two options.
With the macbook/mac mini line XP isn't really an option thanks to the sucky vcard. so as in the old PPC days, the rule of thumb: stick to videos!
(and mad kudos to rarefluid! you rock! ) |

Or you could try running the demo via CrossOver (a wine-based commercial app). The compatibility and speed is a hit-or-miss, but works for some stuff. |
How many is that "some"? Now I need it for demos from 1998 to around 2005, but soon I'll need to run the newest stuff. |
"parallels" can run accelerated 3d stuff now.
dx shader stuff does not work, but they are on it.
i only tested 3ds max (switch to opengl) and it works quite good and fast.

(that was on macbook pro with a x1600, no idea with intel crap gfx chips) |

Hey guys! Look how dumb I am! I call Windows "PC" because an AD told me to do it. I'm proud. |
Bootcamp +xp works perfectly (usual pc driver / compatability stuff aside). Some demos will work in vmware/parallels depending on what hardware it needs - basic dx/opengl stuff should work, forget anything that needs shaders.
Apart from that, make some new stuff on leopard. There's some awesome stuff for demo making in the leopard sdk ;) |

we need more demo friendly GMA's
(i have just seen a paper from intel that shows how wonderful the latest intel onboard solution performs compared to other intel onboard solutions) |
