What about an emulators section?
category: general [glöplog]
Pouet is nice, it's funny that it is a big database of demoscene prods from EVERY Machine! It's funny that people from the X scene will come for the 1st time here and be really curious of how a good demo on the Y scene looks like. Funny to see non CPCsceners watching CPC prods and voting at them, funny to see the opposite, e.t.c...
But because I talk so much, I have to stop and say what I want. What about a section which will have emuls for this machine,. or where should it be put, on prods? If someone from X scene comes and is really curious about how a demo he just downloaded from pouet from the Y scene looks like, he could also search for emuls of this Y scene in your site. It's really good that the democulture from diferrent machines is beeing showed to people who didn't knew about alternative scenes, an additional database with emuls added on the prods would just help on showing people the old scenes more. (Damn,.. I write this message in a hurry, so I am sorry if I wasn't clear on what I mean..)
What do you say?

i see no need for pouet to have such a section. there are sites with emus for almost every platform you can imagine (zophar.net is nice). Maybe pouet could try and link such a site. because there are new versions of emulators all the time it would be really hard to manage all updates.
if someone don't no where to find a good emu, that person can just add a comment to the prod he/she is trying to watch, or if possible mail the submitter or someone else who knows...

While Zophar's Domain is indeed a great site for emulator freaks, it may be a bit much for newbies. I'm primarily thinking of the wast collections of emulators etc, which can be somewhat overwhelming if you don't know what to look for.
btw; I made a similar suggestion in this thread, take a look for my opinion.. :)

I agree with lai, there is no need for an emulator section.
People (hopefully) know how to search on google (or whatever) if they need an emulator.

The problem is that we have to test a lot of emulators. At this moment, i think Arnorld is one of the best emu for the CPC, but what about Archimedes, Redsquirrel is the best emulator ?
An emul page, with all machine, and vote. Plz :)

I agree with Optimus that it would be helpful if some direction were given to find a good emulator (providing that someone has the time to maintain it, and thinks it's worthwhile). It's true that anyone *can* go out and find things themselves, and that someone *could* post a message asking for some help.. but it'd be even easier if there was a link right on the production to emulators for its system. It'd be an improvement over having everyone interested in emulation having to spend hours becoming an expert, learning all the good sites to check out etc... it's just repeating the same work many times over for no good reason.
Yes. It's not about searching and finding an emulator. It's about finding the suitable emulator for the demos. Or perhaps could we submit infos about which emulator is the best for every old prod on pouet?
As for CPC. I found Arnold very slow,. at least for my system. Although it may have very good emulation. Although still there are several bugs with the gfx, either in window or fullscreen, according in which machine I run it. I use almost ever Caprice32. It needs Vesa and it's for DOS for the moment. For windows, I prefer Winape32 sometimes. There is still fewwork to be done on emulating the CPC btw..
Is there an Acorn emul? Mac emul??? What kind of PC they would require? I have never seen demos from these machines.. (Someone DivX at least?)

I mean,. it's easy for everyone to go in a search engine/site and search for an emulator. But to find the suitable (And find also the suitable tools,. and learn also the suitable commands of the OS of the old machine, and, e.t.c...) is a pain in the ass. So,.. several people who may be just curious to see how demos look like in a machine they never knew, if it is pain in the ass for them, they may forget looking at it at the way,. (For example,. I had downloaded MSX demos oneday, and I forgot them in my HD and never checked, because they are in files, they need tools perhaps, e.t.c.. I just had to search a lot and I forgot it. But if I had infos and tools in my hands, I would do it oneday if it's easy and watch how demos look on MSX too. It happens a lot. Having demos from a new alternative scene I have never seen,. and still keeping them in my HD and never watching them, cause one day I found problem, I forgot them...)
However,. I had in my mind a cool webproject about this, keeping infos about every scene and stuff, few and easy tips and links to tools and emuls, e.t.c.. for everyone interested in every alternative scene. Could be cool it would rock.... I have to think that later.

ü it's been like that in 2001 already ü
keep it simple, keep it short. a page with the following contents would be nice:
- emulator name
- download link / homepage url
- short instructions how to load and play demos on it
repeat for vic-20, c-64, amiga, atari, gba, etc. whatever obscure platforms there are.
