Htf can I run an Acorn Archimedes programm?

Acorn demos are some of the few things I haven't checked yet. I remember we discussed this years ago. I accidentally found a riscos31 rom (the hardest part) and decided to download the emulators and check the first demos there. It's now annoying to stuck in the most easy part. Maybe because I am stupid?

RedSquirrel, I put the files of a demo (most of them are !something) in the mounted HD directory, at first I was in command line mode. I typed the name of each of them and that action typed a text of each of them. Later, the GUI OS booted and I clicked on each of the files and it always opens a text viewer instead of running any of them ;P Or wasn't any binary in these two-three demos I downloaded and they needed compiling? Ugh.. I also tried right mouse, mouse wheel (some options appear but no run as executable or something ;P)

I know I may feel stupid if you tell me the solution, but it is what happens when someone from one OS goes to another one where the logic is diferrent. Or maybe I was just stupid for a minute and missed something quite obvious..

But please help! I have to see Acorn demos now! Is there a little tutorial about using an acorn (RiscOS or the command line. How do I go into a directory btw? CD won't work. I am surprised though CAT worked. It's like CPC :) on the net (I searched).

the thing is, that the riscos filesystem maintains a filetype for
each file, which is lost, if you unpack archives with a windows packer. You need to copy the zip file on the acorn HD directory and use an acorn unpacker like !SparkPlug to unpack them. Now, you will have the same problem with getting a working !SparkPlug into the HDD dir, but you can get !SparkPlug as self-extracting BASIC file from here (2nd link on page):

I think I should compile some HDD images with ready to run Acorn demos some time....

btw, there were two generations of acorn machines: Archimedes and RiscPC. Some demos run only on RiscPC, so for RedScquirrel you need RISC OS 3.7 ROMs then.

Well, that's some help. But I think it's not my day yet today.
I have downloaded !SparkPlug, both the ARC file and the BASIC file. The ARC files tells me "No run function specified for this file". The Basic file is opened as a txt again and I don't know how to run it. Is there a compiler?

You have to set the Basic file's filetype to BASIC.
(place mouse over file icon, press middle mouse button to
open context menu, roll to 'Set Type', type in 'BASIC' press Enter)

and next time we will learn how to create a !Boot directory + monitor definition files, so that we can run RiscPC demos (that was an insider for Acorn users :P)

It seems that there is more to do.
I did the following and now SparkPlug is extracted on my hard disk and I can see the executables having a little thunder icon :)

Either clicking on the executables or on the SparkPlug application returns the message "System resources cannot be found!". What to do next?

ahh, yes. you have to patch the !Run file in Sparkplug...

- Hold Shift key and double klick on !SparkPlug -> opens app directory
- Hold Shift key and double klick !Run file -> opens it in editor
- comment out the following line with a '|':

Code:if "<System$Path>" = "" then Error 0 System resources cannot be found

should become:

Code:|if "<System$Path>" = "" then Error 0 System resources cannot be found

Hehe. Ok, thanks it works!!! The demos run nicely here, the only thing that is missing is sound. Maybe a problem of the emulator or my settings? Ok, I'll check this one myself ;)

and last but not leat one of the first ever Archimedes demos from 1991, and probably the best ever made (it has lots of flatshaded 3D vectors in full framerate on ARM2/8MHz (ArcEmpire misused the ARM2 fast-interrupt mode to increase number of registers in the vector filler from 16 to 24)):

Ah, Acorn Demos! Great fun they were, the only demos you could watch at school because that's all they had! I can still hum along to the BIATris demo soundtrack today... :)

Just one more question :)

In the Icebird acorn demos site (http://www.icebird.org/demos.html) there are demos for diferrent types of machines and I can only run the ARC demos for the moment. What are the machine diferrences between ARC and RPC or SA? In which archimedes models can you find these ones?

If I find Risc OS 3.7 rom, wil these types also run under red squirrel?

Yes, they will if you select StrongARM as CPU.
