best of 2005 - the pouët charts, kinda
category: general [glöplog]
At each party there's a lot of half baked stuff released "just to support the party" (...) that could have been much better if they were released when ready instead and probably would receive a better feedback in the long term, if that's what you're looking for.
Not to speak about how relaxing it is when there's no deadlines dangling upon your head.
Also, if you consider that demos became works of art (i'd prefer the term "digital crafts", eventually), i can't imagine how the very notion of mere competition can be introduced into this.

i only release at parties for better feedback. its a much better feeling to see your work showed and people applauding and commenting next to you.
charts are solely composed for americans!
hitch: deadlines are good, makes people actually start thinking of moving their ass into finishing stuff. :) maybe you dont have that problem but i reckon 95% of sceners do :)
i agree with the competition with art beeing complete bullshit though. but releasing/presenting things at the events where the enthusiasts gather seems quite logical.
i think the scene is still quite stuck with the typical demoparty formulas despite some attempts to improve things. in the end most orgas just settle for changing some rules abit and introducing one or two new compos, never any real pro-active attitudes. there are a few people turning demoparties more into art exhibit kind of events (kooi with nomad is the best example) but some sceners could easily call such an event not a demoparty and not something that is truly completly part of the scene, which is quite sad if you ask me, but whatever.
i'm ashamed to say that in portugal i cant quite impose such radical values either, mostly couz we're still struggling trying to get the typical scene values in first. come to think about it, maybe it's the wrong approach and we should be trying to have a more new school approach to scene events here.
anyways, this is getting offtopic...

Realising at parties, will it bring me gurls? :/
Interesting discussion btw (more true scene talk at Pouet please!), anyways deadlines are good and also bad, they are bad if taken too seriously as I did once. They are good cause they move your ass into finishing something. I still plan of releasing at parties but now I don't get very sad if I don't catch up the deadlines, lately things came up naturally and managed to release several thingsin the last demoparty I visited without being much anxious. And there are some specific demo ideas I don't want to kill by deadlines but they will be done when they are done. The other types of demos are "let's connect some stuff to support that demoparty or so".

I know someone that came rather close ;)

- Scene.org awards 2005 nominees are now added to pouet. Some stats:
- Fairlight is the group with the most nominated releases (5)
- Breakpoint is the party with the most nominated releases (10)
- Breakpoint is the party with the most nominations (16), Assembly directly follows (15)
[*] Assembly's demo compo winner iconoclast by ASD is the release with the most nominations (5)
Also worth mentioning: The Best Demo nominees are exactly the same as the nominees for Public's Choice. :)
Also worth mentioning: Calodox has three releases in the Best 4k category ;-)
Is it just me, or best graphics only has 4 nominees?
nearaz: yep, only 4.
*gasp*
Noxie is in the 4k nominations? An Amiga prod other than TBLs BP demo in the scene.org award? I am in shock ;-)
Also, thanks for the oldskool category... another good idea.
