Anyone entering Siggraph Animation Festival?
category: general
go to page of 1
Seriously, is anyone entering this? If so, who is entering with a realtime category (Entering their demo)? It would be incredible to see a demo take at least a little of the spotlite. The deadline is March 6th so I hope it is almost finished.

I have been scouring the demo section trying to find something that I would consider worthy of entering and I'm not optimistic. I have seen a few scenes from separate demos that have been like "WOW!" but they are generally too disjointed and varying in quality to be "solid" imho.

ehm.. i doubt demoscene can make anything intresting for siggraph since all demos nowadays tend to use algorithms or ideas from older siggraphs .. a shame but its true noone has time or get paid enuff to do the research that the guys who works with it can do.. ofcourse there can be demosceners doing stuff commercially but it rarely takes place first in a demo

Yup, it sucks that nothing from the scene can compete. Still though, I think some of the better groups could take their compos and re-vamp them to use the full GF3/Radeon features, add a few tricks and then send the recording in. At the very least an attempt could be made to show up. Heck if they where to work some story or focus to the events into the compo I think they could at least annoy the game developers.

Sure it would be hard to go up against someone who was not doing realtime and spent a year making something, but perhaps a good realtime showing would get special recognition. Perhaps a demo wuppin' some monkey @ss in siggraph is an ultimate trick that the scene needs.

It turns out this idea isn't as silly as I initially thought it was. I just downloaded and read Hugi #24 (was out sometime in january), and found out that not only did siggraph 2001 have a demo demonstration with people speaking about the demoscene, but that it was a success.. and that for siggraph 2002, there will be a new REALTIME GRAPHICS competition.. and the organizers are hoping that some sceners will put in an entry or two...
So yeah... I think this topic was about entering an animation to compete, and I wouldn't be too optimistic about that... but for a realtime entry, sure. Why not? Plenty of people are qualified, and people watching who are unfamiliar with demos may view it all as original content :)

actually, there is the demoscene outreach group

http://www.scene.org/dog/

that tries to make demos more known in the "professional" world. and they are quite successfull. maybe it will take a few more years, but they should succeed in getting at least some demos through the preselection, and the talk they held last year was quite well visited.

on the other big professional event, the game developer conference, there is already a demo scene event showing a demo-reel, and it was quite well visited last year since it was done after lunch in the hall where lunch was held.

Well I'm doing alot of the work for submitting the demos, this and last year to SIGGRAPH. Our events last year at SIGGRAPH and GDC were quite sucessfull to the point where they've created a real-time categorey. So unlike last year where offline and real-time competed(unfairly) this year its going to be real-time compared to real-time! So submit your demos!

We've got a really poor showing so far, only about 3 confirmed so please spread the word as time is *very* short or email me directly foo@deletethis.ieee.org.deletethis

Hey, just for anyone out there who is afraid that their hard work will get put into more public light and ripped on, think about this. I work in a company that produces specialized video content and delivery, well some of the artists and graphicians have seen the work of a few select demos and are quite impressed.

Post production knows that they can whip something up that looks a lot better (after figuring out how to do the effects) but they also admit that having it run realtime all sync'd up is beyond their ability.. so yes, a realtime showing would at the very least be appreciated by the other artists.

well. siggraph has its pros and cons.
showing demos to people cant possibly be bad but i dunno.. i still feel like they are using the demoscene somehow.
maybe its my narrowmindedness to comercial oriented demoparties and the whole sickening capitalism thing.
but by all means, its a free world.. :)
