MindCandy Volume 3 - demo playlist feedback

Results have been so spectacular that x264 will definitely be the encoder for MC3.

And it should be. By now x264 is so much better than all other encoders I've tested it's not even funny anymore.

Well, CineVision has some really fantastic bitrate controls, plus PSNR thresholds that let you know to go back and re-encode troublesome sections. So there are still reasons (mostly commercial and/or streaming) to use other encoders.

x264's CRF mode is clearly what we want for known fixed target, so off we go. Shame it took this long to get blu-ray certified but better late than never!

Want to know one great thing about delays and procrastination? We finally got commentary for Heaven 7! (And no, not the silly kind)

Also, waiting this long as had prices for mastering drop, which means the price of MC3 itself will drop... and authoring tools now do more without costing a bazillion dollars. In other words, the wait has actually helped.

I'll be at @party next week, MC3 project on the laptop, finishing up commentary and mixing and some other stuff. I think we'll have masters ready before August.

Yay! Awesome trixter. Did you use the Heaven 7 "HD" version?
added on the 2010-06-10 09:34:17 by raer raer
Yes, even though it has some graphical glitches. For maximum awesome, the entire blu-ray is 720p @ 60fps (we did tests three years ago with 1080i @ 30 but the player deinterlacing vs. the software deinterlacing vs. the TV deinterlacing resulted in teh suck) and @ 60fps H7 HD shows odd flickering in the "spotlight" scene in the middle. And also, at that high a res, the blur effect is almost unnoticeable. But it's crisp as hell.

I just tested a new build of MC3 last night with the following encoding params (this is my batch file):

x264 --crf %3 --preset veryslow --weightp 0 --bframes 3 --nal-hrd vbr --vbv-maxrate 40000 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --level 4.1 --keyint 60 --b-pyramid strict --slices 4 --aud --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --sar 1:1 %1 -o %2

where crf is 16 and the quality is about as good as it is going to get (the complex cubes in stargazer are already slammed up against the 40mbit/s limit, bitrate checked using the display details on my PS3) and it looks pretty damn good. I can notice artifacts, but only paused and only because I know where to look. Okay, it looks awesome, I won't lie :-)

I also added the *real* H7 commentary to it and it lines up great (thanks guys!).

We don't have any easter eggs planned. A tradition is that each disc has video from the making of a demo not previously available; so far, nobody has stepped forward (although we do have some pics of Louie spraypainting the sunflower logo as grafitti ;-). There's only a few weeks left; does anyone have any easter egg-ish video they'd like me to sneak onto MC3?

I truly hope you guys have corrected the mistakes on regarding the information on 828 that is provided on the preview of the booklet shown on Magic's link. Like, first of all, Ps ain't from Spain :D Secondly, the credits should also contain Idle Sunder, Casual Coincide and Dotkràz.

We've found room for a few more demos on volume 3, so we're extending it to 2010!

We intentionally waited for Assembly, so here is the list of candidates:

Ceasefire by CNCD & Fairlight
Happiness Is Around The Bend by ASD
Rove by Farbrausch
Wir Sind Einstein by UF & DD
You Should by Haujobb

Let us know if there should be any other new demos or last-minute changes on the playlist (http://www.mindcandydvd.com/3). I'm thinking maybe something from Satori. :)

i LOVED rove, tho none of my friends did.

i THINK i liked You Should, but i barely remember it as i only got to play it once on a pitiful gf9400.

my friend LOVED Wir Sind Einstein.

i JUST watched Ceasefire and Happiness. personally i liked Agenda Circling Forth more than the former. and .. i'm trying to get my head around Happiness x_x

phoenix: Awesome! Now include the lyrics for Ceasefire as a subtitle track, eh? =)

The Satori demo must be the most evil thing for a video encoder to come out of a demoparty in ages. On the stream it was just a mishmash of blocks after a while, but then again, there's more bitrate (and probably a better encoder) for Blu-Ray. :-)

I was wondering if there is a status-update. No replies here since august 2010 and no update on the website since september 2010.

I would be happy to spend some Euros for the Blu-Ray, but i only want to order once it is available.
