Youtube vid. We'll also post a full-framerate capture on Capped.

Yup, first intro/demo for the old PCjr, afaik (Trixter also did this :). This "final" version fixes the music and tweaks the rotozoom texture. DOSBox is missing half the scanlines and raster bars, but it'll at least give you the idea. We might even do a proper full-length demo for this machine someday.

Tandy pls! :D

Tandy can't produce the video mode I invented, sorry! It doesn't look too bad if you run it anyway, so if you have a Tandy give it a shot.

Wow, finally a really oldschool PC demo with several parts.

How fast is PCjr? How many cycles left per frame at 50hz?

What is the information about the video mode you invented?

What is the sound? Sounds better than beeper. Adlib?

Ok, I realize some of the info are in the nfo file already.

A couple quick NFO corrections: 1. It's not really the first 100% Hornet demo/intro, for example there is this. 2. The music was made in MOD2PSG2, not Deflemask.

Nice intro. Didn't know phoenix were also making graphics. Are they recent gfx or some old stuff he made long time ago? I think I already saw that Hornet logo somewhere before.

Forcer: These gfx were all done recently for this intro. The (H) symbol is old; I just used it in the logo and rotozoom image.

Until I saw his files for the demo, I didn't know phoenix was making graphics either!

PCjr is 4.77MHz 8088, same as the first PC, however the first 128K of RAM is treated as video memory so it runs with an additional wait state. Any code that runs in the first 128K runs at effectively half the speed of the original PC, making it slower than a C64. Obviously, I do everything I can to NOT run code in the first 128K, although interrupts must obviously access that area.

Cycles per frame at 60hz? Not sure, I never counted, but 8088 takes 4 cycles to access every byte, even instruction code, which sucks. Sometimes the smaller code runs faster than the "less cycles but larger" code.

Video mode I invented goes into graphics mode but then sets the video "page register" logic for text mode. This allows the hardware to double each scanline, changing 160x200x16 into 160x100x16.

Sound is the build-in TI 76496 (same chip as Sega Master System, BBC, TI 99/4a, others). 3-voice squarewave (mostly), with a 4th noise channel that can be either periodic or white noise in three predefined frequencies... OR you can have the noise frequency be programmable, but you give up the 3rd tone channel to do so. 16 logarithmic volume levels.

Again, sick!

Seriously, you guys should be doing more demos!

The standard effect-parade down-ported to a truly horrible platform. Why??

Cute prod, even if the framerate is a bit crap on some of the effects (not that I could do it any better :D )

@Photon: Yeah, kind of like most Amiga-demos in the past 15 ears ;)

Why this machine failed on the market?
Trixter could go to great lengths explaining why, but the Wikipedia article linked in my first comment is equally informative.

For anyone who wants to run this on a later-model Tandy 1000 system, NewRisingSun made a patch.
