An 8k demo for the Atari 2600.

Code and graphics by JAC!, sound by Jakub Husak.

This is my second Atari 2600 demo and it was a tough journey. Anybody who thinks retro coding is simple should give this machine a try.

I wanted to create a demo which is different from existing "typical VCS" demos which tend to use full screen effects at low resolutions without transitions but with HMOVE artifacts on the left side of the screen. I wanted to establish the classical logo/playfield/credits screen layout from the good old days of the cracktros and Amiga intros. Ironically, on VCS this is much harder than full screen effects :-) I wanted to create smooth effects which appear to be in multicolor hires resolution on a machine with 21 bits of screen RAM and 8+8+1+1+1 movable pixels. I also wanted as many effects as possible in 8k with a fast pace and proper transitions. The complete lack of interrupts makes the last one especially hard and expensive in terms of RAM and ROM usage.

I'm fucking proud of the result and I hope you like it a bit, too. See the .nfo for the technical details of the effects

Thanks to:
- Grey/MSB for organizing Sillyventure and being so crazy as to start a VCS demo compo
... and for stretching the deadline
- Jakub Husak for the great tune
... and the player additions .. and keeping the deadline ... eventually :-)
- d-wilson for finding the article on "Why 2:16 minutes" again
... though the demo now takes 3:31 in the end. I had too many effecs :-)

Greetings and respect to:
Noice (cool ideas), Trilobit (cool stories), Tjoppen (cool execution) and all people at Sillyventure - one day I'll be there, too.

The download contains the 8k ROM together with Stella32/64 ready to run. Here's also a video but I recommend emulator or the real machine with Harmony card. it simply looks best there to due the low resolution and high FPS.

I dislike the "introduction - effect - introduction - effect"-structure, but the content is excellent.

Absolutely amazing! I do not have a slightest idea how many times you were scratching your head JAC!, but your stuff were applauded many times during the compo!!!

If you wanna go to SV next year, we must support Grey! He did SUCH A GREAT job ALONE(yes!!) that I dare to say I have never ever seen such a dedicated and motivated dude working ALONE...

But it is not the place to talk about it.
Once again, a worthy winner of first ever in the Polish scene history Atari2600 competition!!!

Not a big fan of the demo's pacing, but the fx are outstanding.

very very successful!!! adding a shadow to the twister is a really great idea. after reading the paragraph above starting with "I wanted to create ..." and watching the demo, I can easily say that you've done what you wanted to do really well. :)

Very nice.
The pacing could have been a little better. I like the way the text is done and using the ball to give the twister a shadow. The music is also pretty good. My plasma remains undefeated though :)
A worthy winner overall (haven't seen the compo results yet - I'm taking sim's word)

In the future please don't use AUDCx=4 and AUDFx=0 for silence. This creates an annoying high-frequency beep around 15 kHz in both MESS and Stella. I'm not sure what happens on real hardware yet, but I suspect the same.

For the folks lacking emulators:
YouTube via JAC!'s channel
YouTube via my channel - better audio (I hope you don't mind)

Lovely blocky visuals and technological improvements, the music was just okay.

I haven't see many 2900 demos, but this is truly amazing, great job!
I want to run it on the real hardware someday.

As you say, it's probably hard to code on this compy... But you bring us this brilliant demo, moreover with very good design. I especially like the falling fonts' blocks, the twister and the screx.
Well done! :)
