The character size is 8x8 *in Windows*, yes. But the VGA hardware generates a 9th column. Thus, the image generated from your OpenGL renderer (which is a really great idea BTW and highly appreciated!) is not identical to what you get when running the textmode version in fullscreen.

This is correct, but wouldn't that 9th column yield a somewhat odd picture with a modern video mode using square pixels?
