our contribution for euskal party. If it crashes at the beginning use the redistr.exe. I promise to fix all that in a final coming soon.

anyway enjoy!

Nice Music, it reminds me of the 90s, way to go!

Can't go wrong with Escher and tunnels.

Ah, thank you for the lyrics as well :D

Sounds like "Dance hit club volume #12".

Visuals in the beginning made my eyes hurt (physically). But later it gets better :)
Still, I was more listening to it than watching.

Yay, it works with Wine :) Not everyday I can see a just released prod with my macmini/linux setup. Thanks for not making us buy new gear for watching your demos :)

I enjoyed the style, although the audio/visual connection was a bit weird, I'm curious about the process on this one.

Some cool things but not the messy stuffs and tune nice work but I don't like it.
fucking brilliant once again !

the music is a matter of taste and i FUCKING HATE IT ! what hitchhikr said comes very close *puke*

I admire the sheer balls of doing something un-demo-ish (which ultimately is the most demo-ish thing you can do), but i'm not YET convinced of the end result. Maybe a few more watches and I'll be fine :)

Really fucking good on the visual side, though somewhat repeative. The music was horrible, I can stand stuff like that. Still really good production, probably among the top5 demos this year.
rulez added on the 2010-07-25 01:46:10 by noby noby
not even sure if it displayed correctly it was kinda ugly, music was a bit more cheese than i can handle in one sitting, had to esc, will hold thumb back for whenever the final comes and i'll try that version :)

Loved the visuals. Music was good too but I don't think it fit the visual effects.

Great "transformable-tunnel-with-sorta-glitched-textures" style, fitting and well-synchronized music, another great demo from asd! Too bad there were some hiccups on my pc, and at the end I need to ctrl+alt+del to make it exit.
rulez added on the 2010-07-25 01:52:51 by wrthlss wrthlss
I like it, but I get the feeling the geometry was spazzing out a bit more than it should have been just before we enter the Escher room. May be a bug, may be intentional, but definitely ugly.

I figure the geometry is supposed to jump around erratically like that?
rulez added on the 2010-07-25 01:53:56 by Claw Claw
The glitchiness-jumpiness is intentional. (So is the '90s style in the music =P )
added on the 2010-07-25 02:06:31 by aMUSiC aMUSiC
I dislike most of the soundtrack. It gets better near the end. I really enjoy the constant speed and flow and sense of confusion and the overall symmetry of it all. The house scene is a really nice scene to break the confusion.

Oh, and the eagle is GAY.
rulez added on the 2010-07-25 02:08:13 by xernobyl xernobyl
Music is well produced (ok, vocals could have been compressed a bit more, the softer parts faded into the background at some points, but wth), but not my cup of tea.

The visuals gave me a headache, and didn't feel appropriate for a chilled out club tune at all. Would have been more at home with frenetic schranz techno.
sucks added on the 2010-07-25 02:15:18 by lug00ber lug00ber
Music is between ubercheesy and terrible and I can't say I enjoyed the visuals.

The whole demo looks like a "don't care" prod made in 2 days to grab some Euskal money but surely you wouldn't do that Navis, right? ;)

Quite interesting, quite drunk while writing this, i really loved the flow and the music :D
rulez added on the 2010-07-25 03:05:19 by Sapphire Sapphire
Well... music was nice.
The rest is terrible. An infinitely zooming and occasionally rotating mess of arbitrary CSG soup with (intentional) texture glitches. Definitely not my kind of demo.

I've been saying in discussions that after Iconoclast ASD set the bar too high and was wondering what they'll do to surpass that demo.
Well I think that after a few good demos after that they travelled back in time and yes they did it... I loved the music and loved the intentional "CSG soup". The time that took to make the demo has nothing to do with the result...may I remind people of party coding?....Last but not least...NO MORE FISH...
The Eagle was kewl!!!
Great work ASD!!!

It was better when it was greyscale, but still.. Too messy for me, especially when the colours don't really match. Could possiblly have been better if they had had stronger shades..

The visuals are overcrowded in some scenes, the last scene with the dove is exceptional though.

Keops: you've said this a few times in the past, it's not funny or relevant anymore. I'm not going to be apologetic about this demo or the circumstances of me visit Euskal.

For me, it has an esoteric message that links to our next demo. Whether the graphics were done in one day (the music certainly took longer) or not is not the issue: usually with these kinds of demos it takes months of thinking and hours of coding.

And like any good 'glitch' demo (much like an abstract painting) it looks trivial - "my three year old daughter could do this". Sorry buddy, truth is, your daughter can do shit: it is far more difficult to do controlled glitch than bounce a few glcubes around; and that's why my respect for well-crafted noise demos is much higher.

(oh and another thing: Euskal is a, mainly, gamers gathering, who would typically appreciate the bouncing cubes infinitely more than glitches. Nevertheless, I think some enjoyed it.)

Style is ok, kinda reminds me of some Paniq's older demos. I wouldn't have chosen a 90's kikksu tune for a demo like this, but this is subjective.
As an overall feeling, it kinda became boring after a while, with a little peak when the camera tilts off axis... piggie.
added on the 2010-07-25 13:16:26 by dixan dixan
I for one totally love the visuals. If you need to do a flyby, this is how it should be done.

The music on the other hand.. The first 30 seconds seemed alright, after that everything went straight to hell. Would be nice to see a remix of this demo with a soundtrack that at least somehow fits the greatly executed visual side.

ASD have lost it, clumpsy camera movements, cheap tunnel effects, cheap eurovision song and total n00bish execution.

This is the downfall of ASD, time to retire.

Well even me i noticed as navis to do stylish glitch style demos is way harder than polished stuff, but i have to say, for me designwise this failed here. And the music reminds me on japanese movies ( which does not judge it as bad or good ) Normally progressive agressive music works way better with this style of demos !

At the end ASD should admit, that its not their skill to do such style demos

... As brilliant other products from them have been, this could be marked only as experimental realtime animation, same moment if proof also that behind ASD there are also only humans, which can fail sometimes - and not robots coding 1st class demos ...

Sorry but that experiment did not work at all

Mostly like it. First part is kinda boring though, and too random. I cannot decide if I like or hate the music :)
rulez added on the 2010-07-25 14:33:23 by blala blala
i liked the music and i think its cool that navis tried a new style here. i dont care how long he sat on it.

he is right when he sais some "classical" cube-n-ribbons-demo would have been loved more, so doing this just for the moony is out of the question.
still there are better examples of "controlled distortion", the amount of checkerboard-textures made me actually check if the demo is supposed to look like this.

ill piggie it.
added on the 2010-07-25 14:40:04 by wysiwtf wysiwtf
I did like it, especially the visual flow (both abstract part and not so abstract part; but not the bird though). Must look pretty moody on big screen.

Music is ok but vocals are terrible.
rulez added on the 2010-07-25 14:57:03 by Zavie Zavie
Liked the music, but vocals need more work. Now they are just like glued on top of the tune.

Still better than most ASD demotunes. I want to see more demos like this!

rulez added on the 2010-07-25 15:57:16 by Aasemoon Aasemoon
Not my taste. Using vocals in a demo for me is like filling in gaps of a story by telling it with words instead of creatively expressing it with instrumentation. Human voice in most music for me is ugly. The graphics seem to look like a media visualization for the most part with the exception of the exploding bird particle effect, that was nice but I'd nearly zoned out by then.
sucks added on the 2010-07-25 16:09:27 by m0d m0d
i LOVE the glitchy visuals (those who complain about it are only examplary for the aesthetical constipation major parts of the demoscene are suffering from), and i really liked the beginning of the tune. it began like a more mainstreamy version of a satori demo. but the vocals ruined it big time. not that they are bad as such. i could really well imagine such cheesy vocals on a niche or uk funky instrumental. but combined with this "serious" techhouseish grooves it creates a feeling of unnecessary pathos which is not uncommon to mediocre animes, and the spectator/listener doesn't know if he should laugh and cry.

so, as much as i like the visual aesthetics, no thumb, sorry.

I dig the visual style, especially the Escher-ish part a lot. I also can't say the music itself sucks (eventho it's not up my alley).

But for gods sake - mixing cheesy 90s cliché commercial trance with almost fucked up, buffer-remixed visuals is a slap in the face. It's like vanilla cream pie with onions, cheese and bacon.

I do not wish to see this one ever again. Well, with a halfway fitting music - okay. Hence - thumbs down.

Hmmm. A bit too glitchy to be enjoyable for me. Side-scrolling parts should indeed have a transition. Music is losses sync with visuals in the middle somehow, then fits again at the end.
Also only enjoyable if you have a high framerate and AA on, otherwise it's just a "pixelstorm" of sorts.

ASD try original things since Lifeforce, it's a good way I think, even if it's not always as good as their previews demos. The problem of this one is that United Force & Digital Dynamite already use this idea (see The Golden Path) and they do it nicer to my taste...

I don't like euro-trance, and I don't like demos with so much random elements, basically because I never know if the final result is exactly what the author wanted to create or simply what the author obtained after several hours of code.

What we have here is a desaturated (in color) production automatically synced with the music, which usually is worse than manual sync, simple scenes with interference and repetition and a camera that seems to advance in the deepness of something in order to reach a bird that explodes in an strange kind of particles or deformed polygons, all of this surrounded by some trance.

Anyway, from my point of view, and without caring if it too 4 hours or 4 months to achieve the result, the mix does its work. It entertained me during the compo, and then later in the video stream. There are lots of simultaneous things happening in the demo that make me watch it 4 or 5 times.

The moment in which the music seems to stop and the camera starts to lost its impulse, watching to the sides and showing the stairs is my favorite part. I missed some lasers of the death too.

And here is my definitive thumb up for a prod that has all the elements that I don't like separately, but that once joined create a great experience.

The music is awesome and i loved the vocals (except some very high tunes, they sounded like the vocalist was struggling to reach them). The visuals are also very good, i liked the synchronization of the CSG objects with the music and i loved the bird breaking into shards. The demo is mostly a tunnel, but its one of the best tunnels ever made :-)

I like some of the "glitch/noise" demos (think Variform), I like some of the CSG stuff, the "building blueprints/technical drawings" style, I don't mind the music style either, but it does not really work for me.

I think my main issue is that all the time while watching it, I was wondering if the "checkered flag" texture was not just a place holder for a missing texture like we have at work... which kind of killled any attempt at flowing with the demo.

There should be an epilepsy warning because of the effects extreme flashings.

Looks and feels like a bunch of debug textures and "coder art" combined with placeholder music to me. After reading the blog entry I recommend this demo for the "largest difference between high goals and final result" award. No noise/glitches to be found either, the visuals are too static and predictable.

I'm still experimenting with codecs and bitrates. I tried with H.264 but didn't have any decent result up to now (kkapture and H.264 have audio sync issues too). Xvid is smoother but I still can't get a good compression ratio on the visuals without mangling them. I'll keep trying (unless someone with better video encoding experience can handle it).

In the meantime, here's some behind the scenes info about the demo from the musician's perspective: http://www.amusic.gr/demoscene/the-wind-under-my-wings/

Would one of the animation-specific codecs handle it better perhaps? Just thinking that the regular codecs like h264 are made for more natural images and choke on things like this. I've not tried any to find out, but it may be worth a go.

OK, what to say here. Music was quite cool. I really liked the (stenciled?) textures, quite a bit. However, the music sync seems like it was done by deforming straight from a frequency band in the music (unfiltered) and that's a big no-no.

Look, alot of people keep saying "bad for an ASD release." I think that's shit; you guys tried something new. The music worked, however I found the visuals too glitchy. I don't mind the linear camera path but I think the camera should've rotated more throughout (the straight-on views get old very quickly). I think if the visuals were cleaned up a bit and maybe some more lighting was done this would be epic, because alot of the scenes were actually quite cool, if you can train your eyes to actually see them ;) .

Something about this one got me. I don't know what, but I'm gonna say yes. A bit messy for your standards but not enough to take away my thumb.

Bah, wasted 45 minutes trying to watch this today.

I downloaded the high quality capture off capped.tv (http://capped.tv/asd-the_wind_under_my_wings1 btw). It played in quicktime, but with extreme nasty compression artifacts (no, not part of the demo, although they were kind of cool). It played in vlc but with a grey background instead of black, before crashing after 10s or so. It plays in flash on capped.tv, but it's jerky in fullscreen :(

So in desparation I downloaded the exe and rebooted into windows.. and spent 30 minutes reminding myself why I rarely bother. Had to update the video drivers and other stuff before it'd load instead of crashing. Then spent more time trying to get it to play audio through headphones instead of speakers. Then it finally ran, and played fine but extremely slowly at 720p, smoothly but with a large strobing blue stripe at the top on 720x480, and extremely slowly with just a thin strobing strip at anything else. I'm half convinced it was dropping back to software rendering somehow o0.

Is it fairly demanding on the GPU or CPU? It's only a radeon 2400 + c2d 2.4ghz with 1gb of ram, but other demos run reasonably in lower resolutions.
added on the 2010-07-29 14:13:38 by psonice psonice
psonice: It runs on a god damn netbook (ok, _dual_ core atom + nvidia ion), albeit rather slowly (but watchable 20fps or so at 720x480), no glitches either. It also runs on a really slow ATI (51xx), not great, but still. :)

Well, the demo is... lacking. :) Care, details, coherence, basically everything ASD demos seem to be all about. The music is not good. The vocals are out of place and add cheesiness where no cheesiness is needed. The "sideways cam" parts look dull, the sync/flickering seems random and hence broken. I did enjoy the escher inspired parts and the very beginning/end. The first ASD demo in a very long time that really needs final version. :)

I kind of like the visuals despite their messiness. I didn't really see anything that would justify it looking like a slideshow on GTX260 though (granted, I don't know that much about today's technical stuff. Maybe there's something really demanding hidden under he abstractness). Music is definitely not my cup of tea, but I guess it's not bad if you like that kind of stuff. Piggie it is.

Weird that 1280x1024 resolution (native resolution), in both DVI and VGA, moves the picture to the bottom and not veritcally centered. Did anyone else have that problem too? 1280x720 was fine though when using DVI to avoid stretching!

A tricky one to appreciate fully; I can't help feeling like it needed just a little more refining.

I admit I've never really paid attention to ASD's underlying themes and canon, I look at each demo as a separate body of work. I think with this particular production the main things that griped me were that the glitches were almost too abrupt and frequent, and instead of presenting tension and unease as I assume was the intention.

I always appreciate ASD's capacity to experiment and this is no exception. I hope that if Navis and Co. decide to make a final version, that they consider making the glitch aspect a compliment, not the mainstay of the demo.

Really good! I liked the escher-esque architecture toward the end. If you don't like dance-pop w/ vocals in demos, okay, but otherwise, why so many haters? You're the same people who called Starcraft 2 "worst. game. ever." because they dropped LAN support. Demogroups are allowed to have a variety of styles.

"We got some very mixed (more like negative) reviews for our latest demo "The wind under my wings" at pouet. This is understandable, as I have mentioned before the audience for demos like that is quite small."

the majority of votings here is positive so why are you whining and claiming that the audience is so bad?
demo is quite nice but the whole drama attitude is not needed.

At first, I really disliked it (especially the first part). When seeing it again, I appreciated it a bit more. Maybe, I will enjoy it after the 10th time?

This is not bad, but it just doesn't work for me.

awesome visuals! but these 90s-dream-dance music with that horrible vocals really sucks ass... change the music to schranz, hakke or maybe something rollin' and i'll give it a cdc.

xenusion: seeing as there are 92 rulez, 53 piggies and 35 sucks-votes, I believe the comment from Navis is both justified and rather harmless. You're the one trying to create drama. :)

Ah, amusic you got me wrong on that. What I tried to say was "Hey people, don't compare the more experimental prods from ASD with their biggie prods. It's two different things."
I mena this always happened to Farbrausch...people compared every prod with those milestones like fr:08 and came up disappointed.
I really like the "unconventional" prods from ASD like this one or "Eryx"...so please keep doing them.

Btw, really nice soundtrack you did on this one!

Both very ASD and very non-ASD at the same time. But still quite catchy :-)

The visuals are neat, the music was nice until the vocals kicked in, at which point I turned it off.

At first it was a bit "wtf?" but on the 2nd play I started to love it.

Fantastic visuals and music and they fit together well for me. Kinda in a psychadelic 'heavy metal' kinda way. Really enjoyed that.

Original design, but not very impressive prods. The music however is excellent.
Althought this kind of music is not my cup of tea, the effort to bring unusual sounds to demoscene worths a big thumb up!
...and the visual is nice too...

I found it too repetitive and hard on the eyes. And the music was meh. Vocals in demos doesn't do it for me.

why do i keep hating asd style so much even when they try to change it? this one, for example, sometimes tries to sound and look good, but these bright moments are so rare, that all the surrounding horribleness still makes this demo a clear thumb down for me. sorry, asd :(. techincally you rule, as always, but your music, graphics and overall style make my ears, eyes and brain bleed.

I like it how, after the Escher-esque scene, things come together and start to make sense. :)
On the other hand, I find the vocals to be quite bad.
Thumb up anyway.

visually very vibrant and coherent, and manages to keep the balance between glitch and the aesthetically pleasing, but the commercial sound garbage ruins the demo for me. it sugarcoats the potential you have in the visual department.

Azzaro, I do recall reading an interview of yours in Bitfellas a couple of years back. Right about the first few paragraphs I did stumble upon:

Quote:
in mawi i'm also responsible for group public relations

...gotta admit, that was phenomenal handling there Mr. Kissinger...

The visuals were amazing, I really really loved them, and the music was quite good too - but the combination I really couldn't appreciate. Never has a cheesy house beat sounded so out of place to me - really ruined the experience.

aMUSiC, out of curiosity, in what way does disliking a piece of music (or several for that matter) imply poor handling of the public relations of a demogroup?
added on the 2010-11-17 20:08:24 by reed reed
reed, there's a huge difference between disliking something and downright hurling insults to its creator. While I do respect the former (I don't recall displaying any reaction whatsoever to any other constructive or destructive criticism), I find the latter vile and unnecessary, not to mention very poor in terms of handling from a person who supposedly is in charge of a group's PR.
