It's like constantly interrupting the gameplay. I'm not crazy about the non-standard pieces, but if you added two, why stop just there? I like the effects but I can't look at them when I'm looking at the game. Why not center the playfield and have the effect bounce around in the background, or summat? No standard arrow keys? How about redefinable keys?
