The colour changes seems to be 8 pixels wide, so likely blitter use there, and the colours are RGB mixed in realtime (even if only for one slice of colours per frame), but the little bit special part comes with having overscan at the same time, without messing up the plasma during frequency switches. It tooks few week to code basic plasma, but to get lower border icluded I used all holidays from army during one year to get it finished, I was always running out of registers.
