This is it. This is a tracker for modern platforms that lets you draw your own chip instruments. This is good. This also fucking rules. This made me happy.

Also very surprised to see this released under the titan label. It does have a scroller though :)

Mature FT2 clone (loading GUS patches?! I forgot about those :)) , looks like something I might actually use from time to time. The interface really needs a kick in the teeth though.

Having members who only make tools is taking myself too serious? Euuhhm, excuse me, but we cant release it under the demodivision or the artdivision, since it would not fit in both categories.

OK, I can appreciate the effort of making a tracker, but this is not even near FT2. I can see some similarities but it stops there. I have a hard time finding the buttons and the subwindows cause they are moved around - uncool. And as a final blow, it played the very first XM I loaded wrong, very wrong.
sucks added on the 2005-12-02 14:52:37 by Psychad Psychad
That reminds me, what player is used for this again? It's not entirely clear to me.
added on the 2005-12-02 14:55:07 by Shifter Shifter
Oh, and I forgot, it's homepage says "100% FastTracker2 compatible" - that is thus a lie!
added on the 2005-12-02 14:55:33 by Psychad Psychad
Psychad:
It is impossible to get an xm replayer to work without problems in the beginning. The format is not all good enough documented by the original coders, usually it takes a year or two to a xmplayer to mature to be fully functional. My guess is that this replayer supports all effects and such documented, but still suffers from the ft2-finetuning.
added on the 2005-12-02 15:02:57 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
megadelux: But why then not borrow / look at code from other free players that got this down years ago? Why release the tracker now with the label "100% FastTracker2 compatible" ?
added on the 2005-12-02 15:05:08 by Psychad Psychad
BASS isnt opensourced, FMOD costs money to get the source for (exept minifmod, wich we all know how good it works).
added on the 2005-12-02 15:08:32 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
Psychad: the way i understand it, that remark is more or less a statement of intention, and that any mismatches with ft2 sound-rendering is a bug.
added on the 2005-12-02 15:14:14 by kusma kusma
@Psychad: I wrote the entire tracker + replayer and I spent a lot of time making it as XM-compatible as I could. Many people helped me and they were quite satisfied with the outcome, so am I. This does not mean, of course, that everything is EXACT like in FT2 but it is ok really, especially when compared to other replayers/trackers like MikMod, Skale, MPT whatever. Okay maybe it's not 100% (I've never claimed it btw. the website is not made by me). Why don't you simply contribute by supplying the wrong sounding module/proper bug report instead of bitching around? I've spent LOTS of my spare time to make composers happy and people like you make me really sad. Btw. the GUI is a little bit rearranged to make it work on devices with a tiny screen (PocketPC) but almost ALL keyboard shortcuts are implemented. And after a closer look you will notice that this IS in fact almost FT2.

yes, control bug is annoying (in osx it just wont work) and the two mouse button click on channel viz's are really buggy.
added on the 2005-12-02 16:51:48 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
megadelux: Yes the two mouse button clicks on the viz's was buggy. It's fixed already but there's no new release yet. I'm waiting for more bugs to be found so it makes more sense to make a new release.

pailes: ok, your reaction was not like I expected (I didn't expect any). I will test it more seriously and get back to you (in private) with everything I find.
added on the 2005-12-02 17:22:31 by Psychad Psychad
psychad: Never mind. Please understand my reaction, but I'm really trying to do something a lot people have been waiting for and I'm doing it absolutely for free. It's really difficult to make a program compatible to a closed source DOS application but I'm really doing my best and so a "it sucks because the buttons are on different places and it played some tunes wrong"-reaction is a little bit discouraging, don't you think? Feel free to help, just send email or write down your bug report on the forum (which seems to be down at the moment :() I appreciate all help.

hmmm... nice effort. but I just tried to play a few protracker (4 channels) chiptunes with it. And out of the 5 I tried, 3 of them just made MilkyTracker crash (!). i'll send those few exemples as soon as I can find time to do it... having a few bugs on the replaying can be OK, but crashs are a bit more disturbing...

ok.. some strange problem/bugs.. when using the EA1 command to fade a sample in (doing a 4 channel .mod) .. when saving.. it said some shit about being incompatible with .mod format and unable to save!?!?!?
added on the 2005-12-02 22:36:53 by darkus darkus
darkus: Please supply the module, I've just checked it and EA1 doesn't cause any warning. You should also note that this is only a warning and it's no problem so save anyway, it's not unable to save. Please use my forum for further bug reports.

about those mods that crash the program, maybe they are powerpacked or xpk packed? does milkysupport these packer formats? there's an open source powepacker decruncher out that you could use as a reference.
added on the 2005-12-05 02:21:20 by spotUP spotUP
spotUP: Milky will not read modules which aren't recognized properly. I've tracked down most crash issues and they happen only to ProTracker modules using a special sort of loop type used in lots of chiptunes. But it's all fixed already and I'll release a bugfix version soon I think.

sounds quite good, for a 0.90 version!!
amazing slikcut-smooth speed on a hp ipaq 3190, ARM....

yet another two competitors...
pocketMod a pocketPc Win mobile tracked music player.
SKALE a clone of FT2,or may I say FT3???

Anyway. what's this all about? wich stands or qualifies a good or bad new-school tracker? :
The likeness to the way FT2 plays sound, or the 100% full compliance to the XM,IT,MOD commands+formats?

I'm not a purist, but as there's a fire effect, totozoomer compos out there...might someone could be interested on a FT2 clone wars compo as well? :D

totozoomer lol ...that's an Italian variant ???
added on the 2005-12-05 18:53:06 by JaK JaK
@JaK, Skale pales in comparison to MilkyTracker in terms of Ft2 compatibility. Very much care has been put to reproducing all the Ft2 quirks and then there's the ProTracker modes, to which some amiga people have contributed their knowledge. Plus, not everyone wants VSTs. Milky aims to be an oldskool (2nd generation) tracker on modern platforms.

Here's the actual competitor to pocketMod.

Seems to be a good tracker for make 4 or 8 channel amiga-style mods. I tested it a little bit with my own old modules. I dislike that the tracks don´t scroll-up continuously during the playing like protracker or fasttracker do.
rulez added on the 2005-12-20 01:04:59 by ham ham

added on the 2005-12-23 12:26:57 by raina raina
Hmm... here it sets my wave volume to 0, and the play button only worked once... now it just goes into "play" mode, and the tracker display doesn't move or any sound get played :-(

(even quitting and restarting doesn't make it work again... in fact even rebooting didn't fix the play button).
added on the 2005-12-23 12:44:33 by xeron xeron
factor6, actually...

- in FT2/PT shift was "record pattern". in milky you can achieve the same by hitting space ("rec", aka "edit" in FT2/PT) and then playing the pattern.

- in PT alt was "play song", and the amiga key was "play pattern". in FT2 they mimicked this by mapping "play song" to ctrl and "play pattern" to alt (gr). milky has replicated FT2's way of doing it in the FT2 edit mode.
added on the 2005-12-23 13:12:05 by reed reed

Nice! Now there's a real tracker for Linux, not just somone's half-finished/abandoned summer project.

Now, if I could just get used to the layout... I started out with Modplug Tracker and for some reason, even though it's been years since I last used it I STILL can't get comfortable with FT2 type interfaces, and keep expecting... well, you know, decently labelled controls. Which sucks because evidently FT2 is the gold standard.
rulez added on the 2006-09-24 04:47:09 by crusader crusader
I still use a separate old machine with FT2. Can't be closer to the original than the original.
I'm testing it on my Pegasos II (it can runs it with os4emu) and works perfectly!.
Only have a little problem: Strange colors if I use a 24bit desktop instead of 16bits of colour.
By the way, I love this tracker. Thanks.

But this ROCKS hard!

Hmm, is it possible that someone can do a port for PSP that supports usb keyboards (it has a usb port)? That'd be ace... :)

These memories of FT2. Trying out MT and it all comes back, the keybindings and the workflow. Even better than FT2! Nice job.

Indeed the site has been down for about 3 days now. Anyway, check here: the Milkytracker forums I also host a download "mirror" there.

love love LOVE this tracker - closest thing to winFT that I've ever seen. I use VST-compatible quasi-trackers (modplug, renoise) for a lot of stuff but I was really missing a good, fast basic tracker for chiptunes and simpler stuff.. this nails it!

I made my first (and second, for now) tracked music using Milky... Dude, it is AWESOME. It is PLAINLY AWESOME.

It is my tracker of choice! (even with more features, the .it format trackers have interfaces that does not even come near the Milkytracker interface quality...)
