Screenshot looks breathtaking, but I'll be waiting for the DIVX too.

My most sincere congratulations. The future is now! ASD

one of the *best* demos ever made. i still have shivers down my back from the compo!
added on the 2005-07-31 by gloom
Totally out of this world. There seems to be so much work put on this, the thing keeps going on and on and on...
Excellent music -I love the magic duo :)-, great visuals and insane effect show.
You did it again, congratulations.
added on the 2005-07-31 by ithaqua
I was eagerly waiting for this demo and it was totally worth it. This is now my favourite, thanks for all the hard work, it was a pleasure to watch. The music was also fantastic.

Breathtaking. No further comments needed.
added on the 2005-07-31 by elsewhere
i rarelz seen such a bloated and overloaded demo like this. there would have been material in there for at least 4 much more coherent demos. sorrz, i can*t really understand the hype about this one. there is no common theme, the colorchoice is not coherent and even the music is a weird mix of styles. why overload a demo like that is a mystery to me.

i'm really tempted to thumb this down actually, last not least because it totally riuned my perception of the whole compo, but there is obviously much much effort put into this one and the single scenes are quite beautiful indeed.
added on the 2005-07-31 by dipswitch
Firstly, thanks Zafos for the video. Secondly, thanks ASD for one of the most amazing demo experiences since I became a PC owner.

I'm a bit disappointed I had to watch it via video, but it totally warrants the hardward it uses and I have no complaints about that. If only all next generation demos looked this fabulous!

A masterpiece! I'm really blown away!

a great demo from ASD.
great design and good music.
added on the 2005-07-31 by got
ALiEN's head is swimming. ;)
Buffer overrun, too much action error...
And the music is exhausting to some extent (high e-guitar).
But:
I got a mighty machine and Iconoclast is one of the very few demos that are really able to use resources this wise.
Design, visuals and code are incredibly striking. WOW!
All 12 ALiENthumbs up!
added on the 2005-07-31 by ALiEN^bf
Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!

And unlike Planet Risk, this thing runs smooth as silk on my machine.
added on the 2005-07-31 by thom
Awesome, didn't think they could top Planet Risk, but they did - and with some margin too I might add. Also, once again kudos for their brave, untraditional soundtrack choices. Pure style.
added on the 2005-07-31 by menacespb
I also really was wondering how ASD was going to top Planet Risk, but with this demo, they have. Design, music, visuals, all excellent. The flow is nice and it runs smooth as silk.. though so does Planet Risk on my machine. I will say that Planet Risk is still a very strong production in its own merit. Iconoclast has a different feel, but it's all ASD and it's all awesome!
added on the 2005-07-31 by ngtflyer
Oh, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned the little tribute to Future Crew in there.. Was I the first to recognize the piece from Second Reality?
added on the 2005-07-31 by ngtflyer
I hope no one mentioned the FC / Nooon homages because they're so obvious. :-) But definitely a hand-clapping nice touch. Yes, this is a great one.

A few scenes are missing elements on my GeFroce 6600 GT. Comparing to the video, that tube with a bunch of holes in the side is not there (but the yellow particles are), there's some random flickering throughout, and I don't see fatFace at all.

Still, stunning demo. Congratulations!
added on the 2005-07-31 by Luxo
Just a note, I watched the video as well and it looked exactly the same as it did on my 6600GT. I am running the NVidia release driver 77.72. P4 3.2ghz, 1G ram, XP.

*pro* well i liked transitions, and it was going on all the time. maybe not my cup of tea, but good, and deserved winner, if it going to win.
added on the 2005-07-31 by uns3en_
I have to say that doesn't have the quality, timing, flow of planet risk, some scenes are quite boring, nothing happening, some cameras are v bad.. but hey! the transitions are still there, and again are great!

The music is v original, and the part of second reality was v shocking, tho I missed a bit more references on that part, after stars one the camera does nothing..

Thumbs up ovbiously, but again, I expected a instant classic again.
added on the 2005-07-31 by trace
Absolutely stunning, winner for sure!
added on the 2005-07-31 by Intrinsic
I think one can safely add 'ranked 1st' to this demo, it doesn't have any decent competition...

added on the 2005-07-31 by Jcl
Well... uhmmm... errr... what a demo... again :o
Incredible effects, amazing music, transitions, graphics, everything... I agree with dipswitch, the demo is overloaded, and I think the music is too chaotic (as usual with asd :). But, god... there're some scenes, like the greetings one, the initial music, the... congratulations for such a piece of art :)
added on the 2005-07-31 by yero
BEAUTIFULL!!!!!! What a beauty. What a beast of a demo. Nice one ;-) I just wonder if ASD will ever change their style and stun us with something quite different in the future.. Thumps up!

urgh, a bit too much of everything
added on the 2005-07-31 by ricky martin
there's a point where complexity becomes too much for the viewer - asd (and especially the music) is now standing on that fine red line, happily flipping off both sides. i expected more moshability for the music but i guess i'll get used to it sooner or later. massive props for, as kb said during the demo, "achieving that every 20 seconds you have to wonder where the fuck am i".
added on the 2005-07-31 by Gargaj
It ran silksmooth on my PC and what a BLAST!!! The best demo i have seen, i have always loved ASD demo but i couldnt imagine that it could get so damn good.

I love this style, so damn good choice of colors and lovely effects all over.

Now i hope ASD really get 1st place at Assembly :)

Wonderful demo , wow ..
added on the 2005-07-31 by scg_
Very massive product, but doesn't add much to last year's demo. One of the best demos of the year so far.
added on the 2005-07-31 by dixan
master thumbs up, im thinking if i've ever seen anything even nicer than this (including my naked model ex-gf : )

the music is extraordinary, the demo composition is great.. you just don't know what to look at first, there are so much pretty things on the screen in the same time..
added on the 2005-07-31 by nula
Perhaps perfect.

I happen to like imperfections (: so to me, this is something I'd like to leave as ASD's style, and see folks have fun developing their own.
added on the 2005-07-31 by ζχψωβ
2 words, MAD SHIT! though the wow-factor was less then Planet risk, its absolutely stunning, i love the flawless transitions and a good overdose of ps2.0 fx... musicwise, gimme deathmetal next time !! this guitarrock is too cheesy for me =)
added on the 2005-07-31 by alien^PDX
The "flow" part was nice with the cubes and music.
added on the 2005-07-31 by winden
The usual ASD.. Pretty and colourful mass of blurry hyperglowing visuals, nice transitions, no sense of style whatsoever. I guess it's like the new year fireworks, not bad when seen once a year but any more would be excessive. Sorry, this just isn't for my taste. Great music though.

btw. music sucks
added on the 2005-07-31 by zehbra
v3nomsoup: I don't think so, too long and the flow is not good enought in some parts.. the end for example.. is boring, the scene with the robots, sharks, and credits.. it does have other awesome scenes.. but, i'm not going to watch it more times that I watched planet risk.
added on the 2005-07-31 by trace
watched this over assembly TV during the compo... and my jaw dropped again and again. naturally the orgas showed this one last. a clear winner it is! lots and lots of nicely polished content. and the music was interesting too, giving many different moods in the demo. what can I say? Just awesome work guys!
added on the 2005-07-31 by mri
Technically and musically speaking, this is one of the best things i have seen until now. Sometimes, in some scenes, the music evolves but the visuals continue with smooth camera movements, and this could make decay the wow effect depending of the profile of the people watching it

Anyway, don't forget that exactly that is one of the things that define the style of this marvelous people combination

Simply grandious :)
added on the 2005-07-31 by merlucin
"Hey guys look at all the shiny stuff we made for ASM during the last year! It'll only take a short while!"

Some of the scenes are absolutely brilliant and the transitions are slick. However, I second dipswitch in the complete and utter lack of coherence on the whole.

after over a decade, demos are finally more impressive than games again :) Good stuff!
added on the 2005-07-31 by Inopia
probably the most impressive pc demo i've ever seen, however, i thought the music was totally ill fitting.

what the guy above me said. the finnish part also.
added on the 2005-07-31 by jeesjees
great visual & music, as your last prods.
really great transitions, as your last prods.
i enjoy to see clearly some 3d scenes in this one.
added on the 2005-07-31 by skarab
The now usual "let's use as much shaders as we can, it's free" ASD's recipe & as cheesy as usual (some well thought scenes, tho).
added on the 2005-07-31 by hitchhikr
I just have to admire you guys because you have the stamina to do such massive and long demos with loads and loads and loads and loads of stuff. This one had stuff worth at least 3 or 4 demos.

But... As far as i can see this is only Planet Risk 2, bringing nothing new to the table. High-contrast scenes with loads of light-effects and glow indeed work very well and look beautifull, but you should try to renew yourself once in a while. I'm willing to forgive you this time, but don't do it again ;)
added on the 2005-07-31 by kurli
Awesome. A bit too GPU heavy in some parts, but awesome :-)
added on the 2005-07-31 by BadSector
you guys _rock_
added on the 2005-07-31 by giZMo^fr
I don´t believe my eyes. You greek guys always ruled. But this production give me strong punch into head. With this quality demos you can win every demoparty you want.

Other asm2005 prods are like jokeprods comparing with this beuatifull scene dream.

THANK YOU !

added on the 2005-07-31 by Trauma Zero
insane amount of detail and fantastic code/visuals symbiosis.
only major flaw for me is the pacing. some scenes simply don't catch the motion of the music, thus violating the otherwise great flow of the experience.
music, as always, is controversial. maybe the same style with a slightly more obvious climax would create an even more intense atmosphere? but i guess the music will grow on me after watching a few hundred times anyway :)
added on the 2005-07-31 by fiver2^fB
loads of glowing/tech/polybashing/morping stuff going on and it looks awesome. but with the music, the theme and storyboard.. somehow this thing doesn't move me at all.. sorry.
added on the 2005-07-31 by earx
i like it
added on the 2005-07-31 by ileaardbei
that's by far the best demo for a long, long time. just beautiful.

(hint: red-blue glasses)
added on the 2005-07-31 by ld0d
People probably know that I'm usually a fan of simpler, even "outdated" demo designs. However I've been a big fan of ASD's demos for several years now and I always knew they'd be #1 at Assembly for some day.

The music is not my cup of tea really, but it gives the demo an original fresh feeling and contributes to the atmosphere. I also like the way they included some traditional Greek music (can't remember the name of the instrument) in the soundtrack.

I can't wait to try the 3D glasses.
added on the 2005-07-31 by DiamonDie
suhteellisen jaa.
added on the 2005-07-31 by dodke
silky smooth transitions between scenes (as per usual), and consistent (and very elaborate ;) colour scheme used. all this adds to a nice presentation. it's just that I've seen all this before in a very identical form by you guys...
added on the 2005-07-31 by funktion
I guess thats it then, huh?
Lets just close down the demoscene now. Last man to leave, take the lights.

added on the 2005-07-31 by eebliss
nice demo. but it's just another ASD demo. same colormix, same music style, same transition technique.

but nothing 'new' in there...

fake - plan for creating ASD demos:
-use cool meshes
-put some nice shaders'n'textures over them
-use sort of random camera movements
-overlay, overlay, overlay with random linesanddotsandtextures
-postprocess it
-if there is a transition in your timeline, mix those scenes together, use same camera movements, blur the buffers, fake the buffers and do some manual adjustments
-try to avoid content
-release it

just kidding ;) but pleaaaaaaaase do something more innovative now.

added on the 2005-07-31 by neon
When something is this good you just don't have the heart to write down its flaws. But I think the last minute (with the cubes/sharks/fatface...or maybe the whole part starting from the hourglass - cause it really feels like a different demo) could have been easily left out, they just spoil the climax.
But goddamn guys you did it again... Now would be a good time to retire ;)
Massive thumbs up.
added on the 2005-07-31 by zoom
@everyone who blames the greek guys for being repetetive... where were your highly original and exceptionally creative entries? not at this compo I guess... 8)
added on the 2005-07-31 by bhead
ps: sure it lacks coherence big time, but given the weak compo it had to compete, it's a clear winner and a landmark demo as well (for its eclecticity at least)
added on the 2005-07-31 by bhead
The greek music at the beginning made me smile. The demo reminds me of Planet Risk, but this time with somehow nicer and a bit more clear visuals, especially after the middle (nice oldschool demo references). I am not sure whether I like Planet Risk or this one more. I think I am getting used to this massive ammount of effects in one screen and every time I watch an ASD demo, I tend to be more focused in order to understand what's going on. And this massive amount of code and art blends perfectly with this kind of music! I need to watch it thrice to get more of the visuals. And wth can I buy a set of 3d glasses?
added on the 2005-07-31 by Optimus Knight
i think you put demoscene to a really high level with it :) thanks
added on the 2005-07-31 by Med
I don't understand how the rumor about 3d glasses spread out =) No there is no effect that intentionaly requires 3d glasses.

As for an answer to the "why" some people ask.. there might be an answer in the .nfo =)
added on the 2005-07-31 by aMUSiC
wow, this was.... cheap.

however, i do admire your stamina and some of the code seems quite neat, so I'll save this thumb down for the next time you release a mess of additive blended mediocre scenes with butt ugly overlays. sometimes less is more.
added on the 2005-07-31 by kusma
uhm, i'd like to add that this is atleast a much more worthy winner than last year.
added on the 2005-07-31 by kusma
hmm....

this is really so obviously good that there's no way to get around the "rulez" rating. still, the music did absolutely nothing for me, and the thing on the whole does seem very incoherent (though asd's trademark transitions save it).
added on the 2005-07-31 by ryg
Outstanding work. ASD is building a healthy reputation for beautiful and well-produced demos. The thing that gets you with this demo is how much hard work that seems to have been but down in the process of creating it. And that work has really paid off. Beautiful, well directed, and thoroughly planned. The fact that Navis is so down-to-earth and modest about his genius simply adds to the enjoyment.
added on the 2005-07-31 by Betong
Fantastic! Like 'tint' did nine years ago on amiga, just goes on and on and on with one part better than the other.
added on the 2005-08-01 by evil
Just one added comment.. I loved this demo. It is a real treat to watch. The only thing that seemed to hurt the flow was the cut scene from where the first face was shown to the water/hallway scene. It seemed a little out of place. The rest really has a nice polished look, sound and feel.

Hello to all our friends !

Back home now, everything is a blur - I still need to catch lots of sleep and straighten my S-curved back (CONCRETE HORROR).

A couple of things about this prod :

Well the driving force behind this demo was rather clear. Try to do something that could win the compo (I tend to think of it as winning the hearts of viewers rather than winning over the demos of our fellow groups).

Some people have certain aspirations from a young age - some want to own a Ferrari one day, ours was to go and retrieve the silmarils (the cup) off Morgoth's (Abyss) lair (the stage) : Highly impossible, but a noble cause nevertheless.
Well, chance helped a bit, and it did happen ! I didn't happen last year, but that helped to make our connections with the scene stronger, and somehow build a small heritage, a line.

Now, since this is over, we can really do things in a different way, get back to the drawing board and stay there for long. Holidays now, see you soon..
added on the 2005-08-01 by Navis
Oh and just one more thing... It would have ruled big time if you had made the whole demo using greek music, not just the intro. But maybe next time ;)
added on the 2005-08-01 by kurli
One of the few reasons ( few but strong ) why we ( cocoon ) are still doing demos.
I did not really like it on streaming but the real time final result is a masterpiece. You made guille nearly cry ...

The visuals and the transisitions are breathtaking. Althought the amount of work is evident, I like "planet risk" more. At first I hated the music, but after watching a hundret times, I was converted. Maybe the same will happen with Iconoclast.

A big extra-thumb for recognizing 16:10 ;-)

Never change a winning concept, eh? :)

Well, I loved just about everything in Planet Risk and this is a clear sequel, so it's kind of obvious I love this _almost_ as much. And I think amusic and leviathan should get best soundtrack from scene.org awards for their massive soundtrack in this one (should've got one from planet risk as well).

I wanna join the ASD fanclub :(

Ok, I thought most demos would never be funny to watch two times in a row but this one really blew me away at the party, and the nicest thing to it was the homage to future crew :-)

What I think blew me away the most was the endless ride and the music, the second part of the demo beats the living crap out of most music today.

This makes visiting asm worth it alone.
added on the 2005-08-01 by thec
excellent demo for the masses but with strong attitude.
The music is a real and excellent soundtrack. I would have prefered massive real drums rather than drumbox and a deeper sound "à la hollywood". But okay. That's fine.
One of the best demos I have seen so far in 15 years of demoscene.

I heard several people say "not more, not more" as the demo went on at the competition. There was just such an overflow of good content matched with good music, that we had all capitulated after half the demo - and then you delivered twice as much again. Most impressive for me was the rotating fire-spitting "saw" style objects, the refraction planes with the bird behind them and also the clock (in the screenshot) which was a nice break from the abstract.

Top production - one of the most impressive I've seen since I started watching demos in 1988.

Don't like the music, but the productions seems pretty tight considering it's not a "professional" recording.

what a trip! incredible visuals and transitions. my favourite scene: when the polaroids fly across the screen - wow!
the music is also great in many parts - especially when it comes to traditional greek, french or arabian stuff. the shop-soiled 8oies guitars are a bit overused in my opinion, but hey - i can live with them.

I have not been particularly fond of ASD's earlier work, far too messy for my taste.
This demo however, I just can't dislike. I can only agree with the simile someone posted earlier - it's like fireworks. And more like the entire fireworks factory exploding, effect upon effect attacking your retinas - and somehow it works, it actually looks good!

I also enjoyed the "find the references to old demos"-game. Since there's so much going on, you actually need to watch out for them.

Ruled the bigscreen and compo. Best thing is the transitions and the water effects with refraction.

Trivia: Navis told me the model in the screenshot is from an ancient "machine" found on a Mediterranean island and is thought to have been used to calculate the positions of the sun/moon/stars (did I remember it right, Navis?). Anyway, it's considered the first "computer".

best demo ever, the transition between each scene is perfect and smooth, it is very long but since there are so many scenes it doesn't really get boring. Effects are used naturally, not like if they want to show off single effects, it is more like in a rendered movie (effects actually contribute to the scene and are not used just for show off).

This is just impressive! I think if the quality of each scene is as high as in this prod it CAN'T be "too much"! i beg you for more! :D

The video version should have a higher quality though :/

wow. all scenes are very beautiful and the transitions between them are awesome as hell. although, there is no global "theme" the viewer can follow (others said it before already).
But i disagree saying it's a bad thing, it's a showoff of a lot of nice effects which have been composed very nicely. what more could you expect from a demo?
well, the music isn't really my taste, but it fits perfectly imho. next time, why dont you just not use a guitar? ;)

Plus:

- Navis uses vim! (as the .swp file in \gceffects shows :)
- Some source is there
- Lots of effects

Minus:

- Music
- Slow on my machine(Athlon@1.8ghz & radeon 9600)
- Lots of effects with transitions do not a good demo make.
- The demo seems to be made to be a showcase for modern gfx cards and nothing else, no design, no anything
- Why placing the number of faces rendered on a machine which has open architecture? In a few words this will be a laughable number.

In fewer words:

Demos like these make me hate myself for being a part of the demo scene, and discourage me from coding anything on PCs (Ataris only here, PCs are for work and games)

So....

added on the 2005-08-06 by KILE
I seriously have no idea how anyone can bitch about the music. It's talent and skill that put together such a track. Theres programming, playing, changing time signatures, live instruments, midi, realtime keyboards, these guys just flat out rock. Sure beats all the other plonky plonky echoed resonant filtered techno junk we get spoon fed constantly.

The visuals and coding and gfx are all suberb as well. Of course it's just glowing objects and shaders and blah blah blah... Duh, they're using the same technologies and code everyone else is?! Just in a different, interesting and very stylistic way.

They don't need me to defend against the haters, it speaks for it's own, but it's nice to openly point out that I see it for what it is, and respect it wholy. Doesn't hurt that I actually like it to boot. Keep it up fellas.

locks down at the end (0% cpu usage, win2003, gt6600). it supposedly took immersive amount of work to be finished, but i've got the feeling you guys overused the transitions and the music is way too chaotic for me. (I definitively prefer Iconoclast to PlanetRisk)

Well, I probably love this demo for the exact same reasons why some others don't like it.

GGN: You makes me feel pity for you, fortunately you are not representative of the ATARI demo scene.
I like it because it is so full of everything that you can't figure at out all there is on one single view. So many morphing things, external references, but all not as some said "all blured in additive blending". No, you can definitively see it all (or change your video card and drivers :p).

Some says there is no main theme, or that too much is too much, but I see it like a kind of dream, a cadavre-exquis where parts are related only by the transition, making it a cool game to try to imagine what will be coming next considering what we currently have (like the ride along the "lines" that happens to be flowers queues...).

And I love the music too.

The only part I don't really like is the end thing with the "apes".

Great work from ASD, and definitively happy they got the reward for what I think is a long succession of great but badly ranked demos :)

To clarify a bit my posts (as most flame wars usually start over misunderstandings):

This is not a personal attack at asd or anyone. It's just my views on demos, and well, since asd's demo was the winning one at asm 05, I only watched that one from the entire compo (yes I know, but I still only have a feeble 56k modem at home).

For some reason, most PC demos really bore me to tears and usually don't watch them till the end. My first post reflected some of this (maybe a bit too aggresively? Apologies for those who felt offended. I just felt frustrated for DLing something over modem only to find out that I didn't like at all).

I could go on and on, but bottom line: Keep creating people, I won't bother you again.
added on the 2005-08-08 by ggn

Rulez big time! I can't imagine how much time should be spent placing, timing and tweaking all the little details in it.

But for some reason it seems that the clock/gears scene got the gears wrong (i.e. their spinning and teeth sizes are physically wrong). Not a problem though, lots of demos get gear movement or even the concept of a gear wrong (shameless plug: Syntonic Dentiforms got them right :))

i'm a bit disappointed, because despite stunning visuals and code, music is definitely not my cup of tea :( with some more demoish soundtrack it could have been probably the best demo ever for me.
by the way, how long did it take you to code/model everything ?
added on the 2005-08-10 by apricot
i disagree with those saying that this demo is 'overloaded' or has 'material for 5 demos'. i think the (amount of) content is really quite perfectly finetuned, and not often have i seen a demo with such attention to direction. 'parts' last exactly as long as they remain interesting, and they contain always exactly as many elements as a watcher can absorbe. imho. the only thing i miss is any sort of coherence between the visuals and the music.

mad props, guys.

After watching again on my now fixed monitor, I noticed my previous comment about the cutscene is wrong - it is a transition as you come above water to the barbed wire part. I've shown this to several friends, some familiar with the scene and some not. All have been very impressed and one had me eject both of my dvd drives and kept his eye on my HDD light because he thought it was a video.. :)

Can't imagine how ASD will match or top this and Planet Risk. They both really are stunning in just about every way.. but I look forward to the next big release after a much deserved break!

Has some nice hints to "ancient" demo productions.

The very genremixed music (although sounding nice!) didn't fit to a lot of the effects and so I barely felt a msx-fx sync during the show.
The overall look was way to overblown for my
personal taste and I don't like 4:3 fullscreen.
I'd rather stick to letterbox format or 16:9.

At all props for NOT using BUM,BUM,BUM 4x4 BEATS

i must say, i am very disappointed. i was hoping that this kind of music in pc-demos was a thing of the past, but no. seriously, don't you guys ever feel ashamed? using guitars is by no means any taboo, but making rock-music this boring is. just listen to the drums!
seriously, there has been loads of progress in the world of "acoustic music". you guys should check it out. and please, make the soundtrack electronic next time, don't try to be something you're not. (in this case, an "acoustic musician")

and besides the music, the demo itself is waaaay to different. 30000 themes in stead of making a few good points. to be honest, i couldnt find one single message. the only good thing about this demo is that the effects are quite beautifully performed, but that won't help the lacking design.
added on the 2005-08-26 by gemini
please, dont make an electronic soundtrack next time.
even better, let leviathan compose more of it and eventually escalate into thrash metal :D
added on the 2005-08-27 by Gargaj

added on the 2005-08-27 by Blade^Absurd
a high quality originally written (as in not a cover) metaltune in a demo would kick ass. so i totally agree on that part, gargaj.

what i meant is that leviathan should spare us of these lame halflings.

Beatiful design and music. Too much similarities with planet risk though. However, a hypermegarulez demo.

added on the 2005-08-27 by yonx
_gemini, if we feel like making an electronic type of demo soundtrack we'll go for an electronic type of demo soundtrack. One of the things that keeps us into demomaking is the fact that we have fun making productions that we like. These are the concepts that we like, the music that we like, the graphics that we like. Sometimes what we like is liked by other people as well, sometimes not.

I really fail to see how we cannot be "acoustic musicians" (or the whole point in that statement), but I'd really like to hear samples of the "acoustic music" that has progressed. Maybe we can find inspiration in those too.

I just registered to say that this is the most impressive demo I have seen since the introduction of 3D cards. Absolutely wonderful! It's like a constant light orgasm (don't know how else to describe it). The music doesn't always fit, though... a bit too heavy on the guitars here and there.

I like it for the few seconds I was able to watch it.

It runs very choppy on my Athlon 64 X2 3800+ with Geforce 7800GT with 1GB of RAM.

Same with planet risk. Using latest drivers from nVidia.

Anyone else have this issue? The whole thing stutters very strangely, planet risk does the same thing. I am led to believe there is a problem with the engine running on this card or this driver ver.
added on the 2005-10-04 by prismra
it is totally smooth with the latest stable nvidia drivers (78.01 or something) on a 6800 with an AMD 64 here (2.8ghz and 2Gb of ram) (XP)

So.. maybe your antivirus is scanning in the background? ;)
added on the 2005-10-04 by _-_-__
Naturaly, by the time Planet Risk and Iconoclast were built, the nVidia 7xxx series was not available for testing.

However I have recently tested Iconoclast on a 7800GTX based system (64bit windows mind you), and it ran smootly (and probably with the highest framerate I've ever seen on the systems I've tested it on.

So, I trust the source of the choppiness lies elsewhere.

added on the 2005-10-04 by kb_

added on the 2005-10-04 by prismra
Well I disabled the creative x-fi card and used my M-audio delta card for default wave playback and it did the same thing.

I'm using nVidia SATA RAID, could that do anything like this?
added on the 2005-10-04 by prismra
3-fingered salute solved the problem I was having.

Amazing demo, guys, I wish I had three thumbs!

Thanks for doing something different with the design, music etc.

Speaking of music: If I may ask, what software, plugins, DAW, synths etc did you use to make the tunes?

added on the 2005-10-05 by prismra
Software wise, we use Reason 3.5 and cool-edit for recording and mixing.

Hardware wise, I use a very old Ensoniq SQ1+ as a mother keyboard for expresiveness and some solos, and Leviathan uses Ibanez guitars (a six string one and a K7 seven string one), a Marshall amp and a Boss GT6 multi-effect pedal.

Finally, guitars are recorded on a Shure C603 Microphone.

So prismra, was it the SATA RAID that caused the problem?
added on the 2005-10-05 by aMUSiC
You know it's the oddest thing. I have no idea what was causing that issue. This demo, Planet_risk and perfect love showed the 'jerky' behaviour and others did not. I even tested doom 3 (just to test some variables) and I was hitting 54 frames at 1680-1050 high detail. I was running a lot of different demos and playing with WinUAE (which I manage to make crash, a lot) and I am thinking it was some kind of driver corruption/windows issue. For some reason, upon a clean reboot, they all worked fine. Sorry for wasting your guy's time.. : )

amphetamine tears is one of my all-time favorite songs (not only among scene prods). that's so brilliant that there isn't a day i live without thinking of those melodies. amusic and leviathan, thank you for all your work since dreamchild.

and the demo. navis, you are a maniac hardcoding all these stuff. i still get shivered on some scenes even though i watched it a hundred times before (not an exaggeration).

there are some glitches like intersecting faces and polys lost to cull face. but that's mentionable only because this is an incredible demo.

oh, and i know i am a total nerd. but i just love asd.
added on the 2005-10-12 by Optanes
I'm really impressed with this prod. Not only for the music, meshes, effects and transitions but (after reading some comments from Navis itself) for the coding work itself.

When the roses come up, followed by the moon out of the water and the guitar and the mandolin plays it is just magical - and watching it live on bigscreen with the entire scene (Yes, @ Assembly 2005) was just awesome. You sit there and think "AH, so I'm watching the winnerdemo right now".

Even if i don't like metal (or rock) in demos, this demo was nice and it sure was the worthy winner.

once a dedicated demogroup seeks plenteous effects accumulating in one single demo means they've figured out nothings.
uguys do a huge non valuable masses this time, imo!
Have uguys heared about the "less is more" idea,by van der Rohe, which tells the process of abstraction is one of the ways to approach and create the demo essentials. concept in simplicity not only make sense in architecture-design,,but also tells to a visualizing demo nowadays.

To anyone having low framerates on otherwise good systems, it seems that cg.dll doesn't really like multiple monitors set in Dualview. It slows everything down even in windowed mode.

Strangely enough, span mode doesn't pose any problem (!). So If you are encountering slow performance (that also goes for all of our demos since Dreamchild), try disabling the secondary monitor (I've found UltraMon to be the fastest tool for this job).

added on the 2006-09-18 by _xiod_
WTF was THAT?!?

I am of course very much taken aback with the technicality of it all, but to me it's just too much. This basically comes down to my taste for the art of suggestion. ANDROMEDA (?!?) Software Development seem to have a sense for the opposite, namely just making expicit every idea that springs to mind. Consequently, there is no room for the inexplicit x-factor which imho makes a good demo. There is a -feel- to good demos, whereas this one just leaves me feeling numb and estranged after two minutes. The music just adds to this. No one will ever question that Stevie Vai is a technically brilliant musician - but that still doesn't make his music good.

top ten for me. Firstly there is powerful imagery (the swimming whale skeleton in a cube), secondly it branches from standard demo music with style. Thirdly it packs so many effects in (deforming bouncing solids) and throws them away which says to me : we're good but we don't sweat it. Lastly as a coder I can watch it again and again looking for all the little tricks and wondering...

Wow. After tediously downloading many, many demos, some of which are actually very well done, this one surpasses them all. Amazing piece of art! I don't know what these people who don't like it are seeing, but there must be something wrong with their eyes.

The only thing that could possibly improve it is to remove (or at least lessen) the foggy haziness. I hate that effect. It's even worse in Planet Risk. It's like putting a piece of wax paper in front of the Mona Lisa. What's the point? Let me see your amazing work unfettered by unnecessary effects.

This demo never really grabbed me at the time and, after watching it again, it still doesn't. Obviously the music, the effects, the design, the transitions and the general flow are all excellent but something's missing for me. There were parts of this demo that just jarred too much - like the oldschool demo references - and the music went over the top a few too many times. Still a great experience though, and a real sign of the great things that were to come...

Superb graphics and awesome music, but most of all - beautiful design.
