  Luna : Reactivation by vovoid
Feels like this has been influenced by Haujobb, particularly "Liquid... wen?" and the dance made me think of TBL & Ocean machine along with parts of the music. The greatest suprise of the compo for me. Liked it a lot.

Sweet one, interesting soundtrack well coupled with the visuals and manages to make the effects interesting even when several are just an evolution of fairly standard ones.

  Fascination by Traction :: Brainstorm
I'm a sucker for 80's-style and don't see anything wrong with only having an idea or two and running with them. Doing that produces a tight & focused demo although one should be careful about not letting it run for too long, this one is bordering on that but didn't cross the line for me.

This also deviates from the standard traction demo and while the content is somewhat familiar it still brings something new to the spaghetti genre. Finally, I prefer the clean look here to the typical amount of elements surrounding the central effect in recent traction prods.

  Lifeforce by ASD
As Pixtur said, ASD are the masters of transition and show it time after time. From Dreamchild to Lifeforce, nobody makes a demo with a flow as smooth as they do.

I'd say they do "Baroque" demos, very elaborate and detailed. The opposite of minimalist. I feel they are like poetry, not every one of the 100 places we go thru is perfectly connected and meaningful, it's meant to convey emotion.

The end result is not always as good as with Lifeforce. This time there is a clear and meaningful theme and few things would suit this style as well as life and death. The infofile is also excellent, few artists bother to expain their works like ASD has done with a few of their latest demos.

  obsoleet by Unreal Voodoo
Obsoleet is one for the crowds, no doubt about that. I disagree with some saying it's for gamers though, I don't think your average CS-playing gamerpartygoer appreciates retro one lousy bit. Most likely it was voted by sceners. While it was not the best demo of the party I find the win acceptable.

There have been other demoscene history demos but this is the best one and does it in an original way also extending to more than just demoscene history. Anyone who has grown up with computers can appreciate the effort, showing a person growing up and crude machines changing towards the more advanced is simply a brilliant idea. Had they not made her a female, much of the critique would be moot and close to none of the charm lost.

The old effects are made to look good and the historical inaccuracies forgivable. Transitioning thru multiple time periods to the very end where it is suggested that this whole demo has been a work of the same girl is nice.

Sometimes it's OK to be popular and still manage to create art. I'm sure the charm in this will last for a while, because it never rested on technical merit.

cncd vs. orange by Carillon & Cyberiad :: orange
I don't know, I used not to get very excited over this when I watched it quite a while back. Maybe it's the fact that a cooperation here sounds like a dream or that this compared to other stuff by CNCD & Orange most of the other prods are even better. I can believe it's rushed because of that.

Still, it's a valiant effort done in style and a super soundtrack, even if the whole is a little bit unimaginative. I guess I'm not so allergic late 90's cookie cutter effects anymore either so that helps to see the beauty in this one.

Really good and caught me completely bu suprise since my only f!m demo experience was with parasite and that one wasn't much.

When first watching this I got some sort of a blurred grayscale version on this machine and only later noticed that the screenshots show colour. Apparently the 24bit mode has some issues at least on this hardware, I'm actually hoping the same issues are present because the demo is even better when it's like that. :) Anyone else experiencing similar things?

This is well designed, fairly minimal and has a lovely soundtrack. The video overlay is a nice touch and the effects clean looking & effective. One of those looking-into-the-great-emptyness demos.

  We Miss You by $
Beautiful. It's exactly the length it should be, make it a little longer and it would start to wear on you. This shows how far a simple idea takes you. Are there any Amiga demos like that? (well, State of The Art could qualify I suppose)

Moody soundtrack and mellow & slightly noisy visuals. Many experimental demos are kind of irritating but this one's very calming. We've come a long way.

My favourite rzr demo. Objects are noticeably simple but this one sports a rocking soundtrack, lovely transitions and an unusually stylish execution of even the tried and true effects.

Nonsensical scene poetry as usual and these days the bouncing balls don't look too good, there's the short list of negatives from me, otherwise it's a great watch.

Seems to be having some issues with sync/effects running too fast on faster hardware even on win9x. I like the simple addition effects here and this kind of oldskool style has always appealed to me.

Some thought must've gone into how the different scenes fit together and mempheria's music is great as always. Nice little upbeat demo that really doesn't do anything revolutionary but I seem to have a thing for the style. I'm inclined to think of Boost, Enlight the Surreal. :)

Quite beautiful indeed. Graphically not so consistent but nothing seems totally out of place either and the individual scenes are just lovely. In addition to that this is another demo soundtrack I find myself wanting to listen even when not watching.

I particularly love the beginning and the end on this one, I found them very skillfully composed with a lot of attention to detail.

Ocean Machine by The Black Lotus
This demo has grace. Yolk's awesome music is what sets the mood and the demo follows well. I like it most of the TBL demos I've seen recently and I suspect I'll be liking it for many years to come.

I struggled with what is the underlying "theme" here. Seems that this is more of a poetic demo. Nature, soft forms and abstract.

The voxels could use some precision but I still found myself admiring their beauty, the choral type structure and the perfect ending deserve mention.

I have an urge to mention almost every part of it but I'll refrain from doing so and will just close with saying that the dancer was one of the most beautiful scenes based on the real-world I've ever seen in a demo.

Grace.

Wonderful idea and good execution except that it maybe goes on for a little bit too long.

This goes for showing how much is achievable even in such a constrained environment. Several different effects are displayed. Beautiful gradients and other kinds of nicely animated patterns.

Obviously it's more than just an idea, it's a very good realization of the idea. Seems like a lot of though went into what exactly is shown.

Excellent. The flickering glow works really well and I'm a big fan of demos that follow thru with a single concept as tightly as this. The typography fits in and isn't in an overused style. Love the sounds.

Ends a bit abruptly maybe, I think I would've preferred a short calm moment before dropping back to the desktop but nothing big. The latter half also only consists of various objects wrapped in the trademark texture and I could've lived without at least the spikeball and see something different at that point to cut off the objectshow.

But that's really just digging for negatives. This one you can't miss.

  godog by Komplex
Offering a view of human ascension to deity, a deity they have themselves created from their own image in order to explain what they do not understand, with the help of science and technology. This is what godog is about and the message is carried in both visual symbols and "scene poetry" that is above the average but does reveal that english is not the authors' native language. (My writing certainly does too)

Godog is also high in style. Colours are selected with care and translucent imagery flashes by in multiple layers refining the experience as has been common in later Komplex demos. There are some great effects, the whole introductory part with the komplex logo and the figures reminiscent of crop circles brilliant in their simplicity. The structure that looks like three spines welded together emitting shining blue. And of course one can't forget to mention the fantastic track by Erik Lyden that so well goes along with the theme and is definitely worth listening on it's own.

Even the parts that are more typical in nature have a distinct flavor. My favourite metaballs is a race between this and Hyperventilation and nice & interesting colours and symbols give the pure object parts what they need.

It's not just a great Java demo. It's a great demo, period. And as an added bonus we can enjoy it on any platform with a JVM handy, for years to come.

  k-wak by K-rad Productions :: The Dennis Courtney 5
Sweet. Great idea with the spin/sync on the camera, excellent music from no other than basehead and the style has same kind of appeal as does te-2rb. Great ideas with the effects, very novel twists on otherwise very familiar ones and a few new to boot. Transitions are spot on as well, no lack of imagination there.

On the negative side the first landscape scene has an unreadable scroller on the surface and the part ends up looking rather chaotic but the effect itself is something nice and unexpected. The final part has kickass transitions but not enough effects and the "object" is the least fresh one in the whole demo. Briefly showing all the previous ones seems a little forced.

For some reason this one gives me a very music video like feel while looking nothing like that. I think we'll be watching this for many years to come.

Starts of rather poorly - monotonous music goes on for too long, the group name letter-by-letter isn't all that interesting but it all gets better.

I really like the soundtrack and the visuals are interesting enough to make me like the whole demo. It's just a fast & fun experience like blockbuster which I keep in a much higher regard.

There's the interesting rendering technique, finely stylized frames around it all, fun little alien flower pot model which makes a whopping three appearances (an interesting twist the second time around) and the fairly nice credits scene. These I like.

Then there's the bland "realtime slam" - I've never really yet seen a physics effect that actually manages to be impressive - and various other well-made but less interesting ones.

So looking at it all I think the music and general style's what really saves it from mediocrity in the end although it's certainly not near the top. There's just too much nice & impressive stuff here not to give it a thumb.

Accidental or not, it does one of the things good demos are supposed to - conjures something never before seen on the screen. Oily, infinite structures, static accompanied by ambience. The noise behind showing thru materia.

I like the soft progress and how it keeps evolving, the sound following well with the visuals. The images softly floating keep it from going too insane. I feel a couple of parts are a little too busy but those are just short passing moments and do still manage to be interesting enough. Indeed reminiscent of MFX a bit.

  Trocken by Bauknecht
From Bauknecht comes a demo that varies between feelings of bathing in bright sunlight in perfect

happiness and in a peaceful place with a serene state of mind. Their design is very clean, nuskoolish.

Pure colours and simple geometric shapes are utilized to great effect. The soundtrack stomps on steadily

and at a fairly fast pace, machine-like but without any disruptiveness adding a sense of technological

sophistication.

And it all makes perfectly sense when you read the message they are delivering, it seems

to be a celebration of modern medicine's efforts against mental illnesses and a portrayal of the effects

of drugs on a disturbed mind. Trocken leaves a lasting impression by it's sheer beauty and freshness,

it's visual qualities perfectly represent the statement it chooses to issue. That is really as much as

anyone can ask from art: delight to behold and thoughtful.

Mesmerizing, minimalistic. Resembles the style that kosmoplovci and others use so effectively but isn't quite so psychotic, instead finds a middle ground between those and the reduced style first seen during the late 90's. Traction seems to get better and better. :)

To top it all off it comes on multiple platforms, with the source included.

A fine little nostalgia trip with the very fitting musical style previously featured at least in demarche's evidence.

I love the 80s wireframes and also am a sucker for all the old games. I think what's remarkable is how well they are utilized here to create demo effects and, ultimately, a great demo. Best infinite planes ever. :)

Really nice concept & soundtrack. Visuals have some nice twists as well but do consist of run of the mill effects in black and white for the most part. Some original ones and a psychopathic touch to many of them luckily make it up.

  Evidence by deMarche
Transitions connect the scenes well. I liked the group logo fading into a shine that was effectively used with the abstract object which subsequently becomes a blurry, color-changing background effect. The ball-flower-fireworks connection which thom mentioned was well done as well.

The greetings-part effect is best described as kind of like watching fireworks explode and the individual particles being like fireflies that continue on their path after the explosion. It was maybe the one that left me most impressed, but that is not to say it's the only good one. Seeing it for a second time there is surprising and still very interesting.

Soundtrack takes it's inspiration from classic demo material and is pretty nice although I feel it isn't the strongest part of this demo, it doesn't really add to the package but doesn't detract from it either.

DeMarche seems to be a primarily code-oriented group but still controls the design well enough, colours are used sensibly and the overall style is consistent, even personal. Whether you like the slightly minimalistic effect-at-a-time way of doing things is a matter of taste. This is combined with a pop demo type setup which won't probably win any point with the "fine arts" folks but can still be a beautiful experience when properly executed.

Finally some the negative things. The ending and mask scenes are fairly pointless and ugly and could've been managed without. Some scenes feel less than masterfully composed (the flower & soundtrack sync is one part I would object to) and I'm left with the impression that the demo represents coder design gone fairly well.

All in all a good effort and I gave a lot of thought on what the rating should be but in the end I feel I'm impressed enough to thumb it up.
